Nigella (Love-in-a-mist) is one of the easiest flowers you can grow and perfect for beginners or low-maintenance gardens. It’s a fast-growing, self-seeding annual, so once you plant it, it often comes back year after year.
Nigella thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil-no heavy feeding required.
For cooler zones 3-7, direct sow outdoors starting in winter through early spring. In zones 8–9, sow nigella late fall through winter (about October–January) This is so plants grow during cool weather and bloom before heat arrives.
In most zones, including zone 6b, Nigella blooms in late May through June with delicate blue, white, pink, flowers and airy foliage that pollinators absolutely love.
After flowering, it forms beautiful seed pods, and the seeds are edible with a slightly peppery flavor, making this plant both beautiful and useful.
