Japanese Gansai watercolors offer a different experience than European palettes—subtle opacity, deep atmosphere, and techniques rooted in Nihonga and Sumi-e. 🌊 Both challenging and rewarding, Gansai encourages artists to break routine and explore watercolor in a whole new way.

For Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) and related techniques, one works with Sumi ink and mineral pigments on Washi paper (or silk). These pigments traditionally come in ten different particle sizes — and as the particle size changes, so does the tone and appearance of the color.
For Nihonga you usually take one of the three finest grades and mix it with Nikawa (animal glue) as a binder. If you can’t find Nikawa in your art supply store, animal skin glue, ox glue, or rabbit glue are good substitutes. The one I’m using here is a ready-made 20% solution from @pigment_tokyo. The best way to mix pigment and glue is simply with your finger (unless you need a large amount). Make sure it’s fully blended before adding water.
Used creamy, the color dries matte, opaque, and powdery. Add more water and you can paint with it like a watercolor. At the end of the reel you can see how I diluted the mixture into a very light hue for a new Breath Meditation.
Before you ask: the small water dropper is called a suiteki (Japan) or shuidi (China) and is commonly found in Asian calligraphy and art supply shops. I bought mine many years ago from @blueheronarts
And the pigment: here I’m using English Red Deep, a burned-earth pigment from @kremerpigmente.
And no — I’m not paid to mention any brands. It’s simply easier to list them here than to answer all the DMs :-)

This is a traditional Nihonga technique known as "urauchi" (backing).
To protect the washi and increase its strength for painting,
a separate sheet of washi is coated with starch paste and laminated onto the back of the picture surface.
After this, the paper is turned over, and the painting begins on the front surface.

When you step into Pigment Tokyo, it feels less like a store and more like a temple of color. 🌈✨
Lining the walls are over 4,500 pigments — jars of pure color sourced from minerals, shells, plants, and even soil. Each one is the raw essence of what later becomes paint or ink.
Some of the most fascinating pigments here are natural pigments used by artists for centuries:
🔵 Ultramarine Blue — once extracted from the rare stone lapis lazuli, mined in Afghanistan. In the Renaissance, this blue was more expensive than gold and reserved for the robes of the Virgin Mary in paintings.
❤️ Vermilion — derived from cinnabar, a bright red mineral, once a symbol of power in Chinese and Japanese art.
🟢 Malachite Green — ground from copper carbonate mineral, producing deep earthy greens found in ancient murals and Japanese nihonga painting.
🟡 Ochre & Yellow Earth — some of humanity’s oldest colors, used since cave paintings, still alive here in jars of fine powder.
And unique to Japan, you’ll find Iwa-enogu (岩絵具) — natural mineral pigments specially prepared for nihonga (Japanese painting), preserving centuries of artistic tradition.
Walking through Pigment Tokyo is like traveling through the history of art, science, and nature — all distilled into color. It’s not just shopping for art supplies, it’s stepping inside the origin story of creativity.
📍 Location: Tennozu Isle, Tokyo (quiet art district by the canal)
⏰ Hours: 11:00–19:00 (closed Mondays)
If you’re an artist, designer, or simply a color lover, this is one of Tokyo’s hidden gems you cannot miss.

🎨 Painting with mineral pigments mixed with Nikawa (animal glue)
The particle size of mineral pigments varies by number, and since each color has a different density, they are often layered rather than mixed to adjust tones 🖌️
Unlike tube paints, they create a unique textured, grainy finish that’s truly one of a kind ✨

番号により粒度が異なる岩絵具は、色により質量が異なるため、混色よりレイヤー状に色を重ねて色味を調整することが多いです🖌️
チューブ絵具とは異なるざらっとした質感も特徴的です✨
