The Node.js event loop, explained in 9 seconds. Node runs all your JavaScript on ONE thread. It stays fast by never holding a task for long: callbacks flow through the event loop, run on the call stack, and libuv handles timers and I/O in the background. The trap: one heavy CPU task (like JSON.parse on an 80MB payload) runs on the call stack and freezes everything. The event loop can't pull the next callback, the queue piles up, and every other request stalls. Response time goes from 8ms to 9,400ms. The fix: move CPU-bound work to a worker thread (worker_threads). The main thread frees up, the queue drains, and the worker hands its result back as a callback. Rule of thumb: the event loop is 1 thread, so never block it. Save this for your next Node.js interview. Send it to the dev whose API "randomly" freezes under load. #nodejs #systemdesign #backend #javascript #softwareengineering #trending #vibecoding #softwarearchitecture #productionready

๐Ÿšจ Most developers know that Node.js is single-threaded. Very few know why it's insanely scalable. ๐Ÿ‘€ Here's the secret behind Node.js: โšก Event Loop ๐Ÿงต libuv Thread Pool ๐Ÿ“ฅ Callback Queue ๐Ÿš€ Non-Blocking I/O Together, they allow Node.js to serve thousands of concurrent requests efficiently. Five identical projects. Same eight dependencies. Same registry. npm: 294.6 MB pnpm: 72.0 MB I didn't estimate that. I actually ran both on my machine and measured the volume โ€” and the gap surprised me enough that I rebuilt the whole explainer around it. Here's the part nobody tells you: Project 1 costs the same either way. 59.1 MB with npm, 57.4 MB with pnpm. Basically identical. So if you have one repo, this whole debate genuinely does not matter and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. The difference is what happens next. Every project you add after that costs npm another ~59 MB. It costs pnpm ~3.7 MB. Because npm gives each project its own copy of React, and pnpm keeps one copy in a global store and links it in. Five projects, one copy on disk. Then there's the thing that actually bites you in production ๐Ÿ‘‡ npm flattens node_modules. So when I installed express, body-parser got hoisted to the top level too โ€” and require("body-parser") worked perfectly, in a project that never declared it. Until express drops it in a future version and your app dies with MODULE_NOT_FOUND at 2am. That's a phantom dependency. npm's tree: 85 top-level entries. pnpm's: 8. Only what you actually asked for. Being fair though โ€” I tested install speed too, and on a small project with a warm cache npm was actually FASTER. So this isn't a clean sweep. pnpm wins on many projects, big dependency trees, and monorepos. Commands barely change. npm install react โ†’ pnpm add react. That's it. Which one are you on? And has a phantom dependency ever taken you down? ๐Ÿ‘‡ #pnpm #npm #javascript #webdev #nodejs
