Bella is nonverbal, but she has so much to say! Down syndrome is a blessing. We are blessed every day to have her and her two siblings with Down syndrome!
Well, that’s new! #nonverbal #autism
My brother Bodi is 32, Autistic level 3 with complex high support needs.
Bodi is non verbal but not quiet, he makes lots of sounds and vocalisations with his voice. These are some of his most common vocals and what they indicate.

For those asking how old Jaiden was when he started talking and when he started having conversations with me after being considered nonverbal early on in our Autism journey. ❤️
Jaiden started talking at around 4 years old. Up until then, he communicated mainly through babbling, echolalia (the repetition of words, sounds, and phrases), and vocal stimming as attempts to interact and express himself.
These early vocalizations are not meaningless and should be supported as they play a significant role in developing a child’s language skills.
Some ask what I did to help Jaiden talk, but honestly, there’s no blueprint, no one-size-fits-all approach in this journey. Even after he started talking, it took more time for him to fully understand, build his vocabulary, and hold conversations.
I will say that Speech Therapy also helped a lot. We started through Early Intervention, had sessions multiple times a week, and continued from around age 3 ½ until the end of 5th grade, when I was told he no longer needed it.
While it’s a blessing to hear our children speak, what really matters is connecting with them in ways that meet them where they are and make them feel the most supported, seen, and included. Whether it’s through an AAC device, sign language, or even a hug or smile, it’s beautiful and important because it comes from our kids.
Even when he couldn’t talk back, I always talked to him and held “conversations” with him because I knew he could hear me and I wanted to make sure he was part of the conversation rather than always outside of it. These days, it’s hard to get him to stop talking 😂
Please remember that’s what’s for our kids won’t miss them, in their own time and their own ways. And we don’t need to follow general timelines. We take things a day at a time with lots of love, patience, faith, tenacity, and teamwork! 💙 @jai_at_play

Milann is nonverbal but she randomly says little words here and there, but it’s never on command. 😂 Yesterday she CLEARLY said, “what the…” 😭 My older daughter and all her friends heard it too, so of course we had to ask… “What the WHAT, Milann?” 🤣
What do y’all think she was about to say? 😂

I’m reversing the wording I hear people use when they say someone “went from Level 1 to Level 3” or “had a Level 3 day.” I don’t believe you slide up and down the autism spectrum. Support needs and behaviors can vary from day to day, but that doesn’t mean someone’s autism level is changing. So I told my Level 3 son he better act Level 1 at IHOP.
