第一次站上北極點時，
低頭看著自己的腳下。
那一刻，突然意識到一件事。
我站著的，不是土地。
而是一塊漂浮在北冰洋上的海冰。
腳下約 2～3 公尺厚的海冰，
下方，
就是超過 4,000 公尺深的北冰洋。
那種感覺很難形容。
你知道自己站在地球最北端，
卻也知道，
腳下的一切，
其實一直都在移動。
很多人以為，
北極點（90°N）是一個固定的地方。
事實上，
固定的是座標，不是冰。
海冰受到風應力（Wind Stress）、海洋環流（Ocean Circulation）、海冰內部應力（Internal Ice Stress），以及地球自轉所產生的科氏力（Coriolis Effect）共同影響，不斷漂移。
也就是說，
今天站在北極點，
幾個小時後，
你腳下的這塊冰，
可能已經漂離原來的位置。
這也是為什麼，
徒步前往北極點（Last Degree）的探險家，
每天最大的敵人，
並不是低溫。
而是Sea Ice Drift（海冰漂移）。
白天努力向北前進十幾甚至二十公里，
夜晚紮營休息時，
整片海冰卻可能隨著洋流悄悄向南漂移。
隔天醒來，
GPS 顯示，
昨天一整天的努力，
已經被大自然拿回了一部分。
在北極，
真正挑戰你的，
不是距離。
而是一個持續運動的地球系統。
近四十多年的衛星觀測，
也讓我們重新認識這片冰海。
根據 NASA 與 NSIDC 的資料，
自 1979 年開始的衛星紀錄以來，
北極夏季最低海冰面積，
平均每十年減少約 13%。
更值得關注的是，
原本厚實、可以存在數年的多年海冰（Multi-year Ice），
正快速被較薄、較容易破裂的一年冰（First-year Ice）取代。
冰層變薄，
代表海冰更容易受到風力推動，
漂移速度增加，
也更容易形成冰裂（Leads）與開放水域。
站在那裡，
我想到的，
其實不是「我終於來到北極點」。
而是第一次如此真實地感受到，
地球並不是靜止的。
海洋在流動。
海冰在漂移。
大氣在循環。
氣候持續改變。
而我們，
只是短暫站在這個巨大系統中的一位觀察者。
也許，
探險真正的意義，
從來不是征服自然。
而是當你親眼看見這一切之後，
開始理解這顆星球，
並對它多一分敬畏。

Whew, after the year we’ve had, who else can relate?
Our cofounders @mitty and @paulnicklen were in stitches watching as this polar bear flopped face-first into the snow and slid all the way down the hill. In the animal kingdom, it’s all about conserving energy whenever possible.
In winter, many animals rest for long stretches, travel less, and avoid unnecessary effort. This seasonal slowdown is a natural survival strategy. Energy is saved for when it truly counts.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget that we are part of the animal kingdom too. It’s okay to slow down, take a rest, and conserve your energy. Rest is how we come back stronger, clearer, and ready to keep fighting for our oceans in the new year!
