The unspoken rules of summer in DC, from someone who grew up here 🌸 You won’t find these in any travel guide. They’re the things you only learn after you’ve lived through a few seasons in this city. 🌞 August is the great DC clear-out. Congress goes on recess and half the city quietly disappears. If you’re still here, it’s the best month for restaurant reservations and traffic that actually moves. 🌞 The humidity is not a joke. Locals know the difference between “it’s nice out” and “we’re surviving today.” Dress accordingly. Hydrate accordingly. 🌞 Sunset at the Wharf or Hains Point will beat any rooftop, every time. The water moves the air. Trust me. 🌞 Tidal Basin pedal boats are a perfectly acceptable adult activity. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. 🌞 If you don’t have a beach plan worked out by Memorial Day, you’re already behind. Rehoboth, Bethany, Dewey, Ocean City. The regulars have a Friday afternoon traffic strategy and a beach town of choice. 🌞 Free things to do are everywhere. Jazz in the Garden, Screen on the Green, Friday concerts at Yards Park, fountain hopping near the monuments. You don’t have to spend $80 to have a perfect Friday night. 🌞 The most important one: a half-smoke at Ben’s at some point in the summer is basically required by law. Rule 1: If you are telling someone who isn't local where you live, you'll say '30 minutes outside of DC on a good day' Rule 2: “It’s only 15 miles away” means absolutely nothing. Rule 3: Someone will ask what you do for work within the first 10 minutes of meeting you. Rule 4: You'll have to prepare for four seasons. Sometimes all in one day. Rule 5: You'll take the wrong exit off I-95 towards Baltimore, DC, or Tysons corner atleast once (yall know what exit I'm talking about) 😂 Rule 6: You can be in a charming historic town, a bustling city, horse country, and wine country all in the same day. Rule 7: The first snowfall of the year will send everyone to the grocery store to buy all of the toilet paper and water Rule 8: Every local has a neighborhood they’ll never stop trying to convince you to move to. Rule 9: Doesn't matter what day or time you go to Costco. It will always be crowded. Rule 10: You’ll complain about Northern Virginia nonstop, but the second someone else does, you’ll defend it. 👩🏻‍💻 More than 1500 new data centers are in various stages of development with 67% of them planned for rural areas in the South, Midwest, and Southwest to secure massive amounts of power and land 🌎 Northern Virginia remains the “data center capital of the world”, but a massive amount of new gigawatt-scale development is also being built in rural southern Virginia, which will lead to a total of 685 centers in the state when complete ⛰️ Georgia & North Carolina are also in the top 15 states for planned data center expansions 🤓 I’m not smart enough to have the solution to protecting the natural world while we steamroll into faster technological advances than humans can keep up with, but the internet seems to be full of opinions! ⁉️ Anyone have the answer?? 👋🏻 Hi. Consider this your warning 😅 Loudoun County will absolutely ruin you for everywhere else. Because nowhere else can you go from a Target run… to sitting at a vineyard 20 minutes later watching the sunset over the mountains. You get proximity to Washington, DC while somehow still being surrounded by wineries, farm stands, little towns, and winding back roads. But honestly? The thing that makes people stay here is the lifestyle. Safe neighborhoods where kids play outside until the stars come out, ride their bikes to fish in the neighborhood pond, and somehow always end up at someone else’s house by dinner time. Neighbors who actually stop and chat, plan impromptu happy hours in driveways, and slowly become the people you call when you need literally anything 🤍 The kind of communities where people show up for each other, gather on the weekends, walk to the bus stop together, and slowly become like family. People move here for the schools, newer homes, bigger yards, or proximity to DC. But they stay because somewhere along the way, Loudoun starts feeling less like a suburb… and more like the kind of childhood and community people thought didn’t really exist anymore 🤍 Thinking about moving to Loudoun County?
