Understanding Notan
Notan is the foundation of strong composition.
It’s the art of organizing light and dark—not detail, not color, but structure.
When you simplify an image into just black and white, you begin to see clearly.
No distractions. Just relationships.
If it works in Notan, it works in everything.
This process teaches you how to: • See the big picture
• Build balance, not symmetry
• Create harmony between shapes
• Guide the viewer’s eye with intention
Notan is where composition begins.
Before detail. Before color. Before rendering.
It shifts your mindset—from copying what you see
to designing what you see.
Quick studies. Bold decisions. Clear structure.
Because no amount of detail can fix a weak foundation.
Keep it simple. Keep it intentional.
That’s where strong art begins. #Notan #ArtFundamentals #Composition #Drawing #Painting

This ‘shadow shapes’ tutorial is from a couple months ago which we also worked with during my daily drawing livestreams and I aim to share some of the insights I’ve gained and process of this engaging way to see and make our images. From the concept of Notan to addressing the subtle transitions between value shapes, we work on these three drawings with calligraphy pen, pencil and ballpoint.
@nady_art is the wonderful star of this tutorial, a vibrant artist and educator. Thanks Nadyia!!

Don't Let the Sun Steal Your Aura. 💎✨
🚀 The Reality: Most people only get SPF 15 out of an SPF 50 bottle due to poor application.
🚀 The Move: Use the Two-Finger Rule and let it dry for 15 minutes. 🛡️
🚀 The Result: Zero tan, zero spots, and a permanent Glass Skin glow. 📈
