Administering TPN and Lipids💧
→ TPN is Total Parenteral Nutrition, or how we supply nutrition to patients who are unable to ingest or absorb normally
→ Lipids are ESSENTIAL for fatty acids, energy, and immunity
→ When we hang TPN and lipids together, specific 1.2 micron filter tubing must be used
→ If the bags of TPN and lipids are SEPARATED, the lipids can be connected at the Y-site of the primary tubing; an additional filter may be needed depending on tubing & facility policy
❗DON’T FORGET:
-A central venous catheter is required for the administration of TPN
-Always monitor for adverse reactions
-If TPN ever runs out or the next bag is delayed, hang 10% dextrose in water. This will help to prevent a drop in blood sugar!
