This isn’t just for my fellow Filipinos because I know other expats and immigrants will understand this too. Moving abroad feels like starting your life all over again. You don’t know the people you’ll meet, the culture you’ll grow into, and sometimes you don’t even know the language. Every day brings new experiences, new struggles, and new stories. Before I moved, no one really warned me how hard it would be. I came to a new country blindly, scared but hopeful, and learned how to depend on myself in ways I never had to before. So here are the mistakes I made living abroad, the ones that taught me the hardest lessons: 1. Overworking just to prove my worth Lesson: my value shouldn’t be measured by exhaustion and my health is worth more than the money 2. Comparing my life to people back home or other Filipino immigrants Lesson: we all have our own timelines and everyone’s journey looks different 3. Saying yes to everything out of fear of losing opportunities Lesson: it’s important for me to set boundaries in order to protect my peace 4. Ignoring my mental health at first Lesson: healing is just as important as hustling 5. Romanticizing life abroad a little too much Lesson: it’s okay to admit that life abroad isn’t always glamorous and it can be lonely and hard too 6. Thinking I had to change to fit in Lesson: being a Filipina and carrying our values is my strength. My sense of family, respect for others, resilience, and warmth aren’t weaknesses to hide, they are what allow me to stand out, connect deeply, and navigate life abroad with pride. 7. This last one is for my fellow Filipinos across the world: One of the biggest mistakes I made was always putting others before myself, thinking I had to be the one to lift my family out of poverty. I thought love meant sacrificing everything, even when I had nothing left for myself. The lesson I learned: I can support my family without destroying my mental health, my dreams, or my future.
