👀 Did you know? The coconut octopus is one of the ocean’s most remarkable tool‑users, collecting coconut shells, seashells, and other objects to build shelters, carry mobile hideouts, and protect itself from predators. Its intelligence, problem‑solving skills, and adaptability continue to surprise scientists. But as coastal habitats change and ocean temperatures rise, we still don’t fully understand how these shifts affect its behavior, food sources, or survival strategies, especially for a species so dependent on healthy seafloor ecosystems. 🔵 @ioc_unesco works to fill these knowledge gaps by strengthening ocean science, essential for effective ocean action. By coordinating ocean observing systems, research, early warning systems, data management, capacity development, and ocean literacy programmes, the IOC provides services that strengthen ocean governance — supporting better ocean management and more informed policies for the benefit of marine ecosystems and the communities that rely on them. Because better understanding means better safeguarding. Discover how IOC turns ocean science and knowledge into action 🔗 via the link in bio! #OceanScience #OceanAction 🎥 @jacobguy.media
Fun EGGSPERIMENT 😁 Cracking Open an Egg at 12m Deep to See What Happens! What happens when you crack an egg underwater at 12 meters (40 feet) deep? The results are surprisingly different from what you'd expect on the surface! Pressure, buoyancy, and the movement of the water all play a role in this unusual underwater experiment. #UnderwaterExperiment #ScubaDiving #OceanScience #EggChallenge #MarineLife UnderwaterWorld DivingAdventure Science Keywords: underwater egg experiment, cracking an egg underwater, scuba diving experiment, ocean science, underwater challenge, 12m deep, pressure underwater, diving adventure, marine science, underwater video.
🌊🌪️🏰 Nazaré — Home of the World's Most Legendary Waves 😨⚓ Standing at the edge of the Atlantic, the iconic lighthouse of Nazaré, Portugal overlooks one of the most extraordinary surf locations on Earth. Every winter, powerful ocean swells interact with the massive Nazaré Canyon—a deep underwater trench stretching over 200 kilometres offshore. This unique underwater landscape concentrates wave energy, creating enormous walls of water that have attracted the world's most fearless big-wave surfers. While these giants are among the largest ever surfed, every wave is shaped by constantly changing ocean conditions and demands exceptional skill and preparation. 🌊 Nazaré Canyon: A deep underwater canyon focuses incoming Atlantic swells, helping generate exceptionally large waves 🏰 Historic Lighthouse: The famous Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo provides one of the world's best viewpoints for watching giant surf 🌬️ Winter Swells: The biggest waves usually arrive during the North Atlantic storm season between autumn and early spring 🏄 Elite Big-Wave Surfing: Only highly trained surfers with specialised tow-in teams attempt these extreme conditions 📏 Incredible Heights: Nazaré regularly produces waves exceeding 80 feet (24 metres) under the right conditions 🌍 World Record Location: Sebastian Steudtner rode a wave measured at approximately 86 feet (26.2 metres) at Nazaré in 2020, recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest wave ever surfed 💀 Nature's Raw Power: Even experienced professionals rely on rescue teams, jet skis, and detailed safety planning because the ocean here can become unpredictable within seconds. Nazaré is more than a surfing destination—it's a place where ocean science, geography, and raw Atlantic power combine to create one of the planet's most spectacular natural phenomena. Every massive swell is a reminder that the sea commands respect, no matter how experienced you are. 💬 Would you stand on the lighthouse to watch these giant waves—or would you rather stay far away from the crashing surf? 🎥 Video Credit: DM for credits/removal to the real owner. 👉 Follow @sea_spectral for more dar
In this special feature, @PangeaSeed founder and executive director Tré Packard shares the story behind the organization and the mission that continues to drive our work around the world. What began as an effort to bridge art and ocean conservation has grown into a global movement. Through large scale public art projects, community engagement, and creative collaborations with scientists and local partners, PangeaSeed has worked in cities across the globe to spark conversation and inspire action for our blue planet. Public art has the power to meet people where they are. On their daily commute. In their own neighbourhoods. It transforms shared spaces into platforms for awareness, education, and change. Right now, that work is unfolding in Ōtautahi with Sea Signals. In partnership with @flarestreetartfestival and @watchthisspacechch, artists from Aotearoa and around the world are creating murals that connect ocean science, culture, and creativity in the public realm. Each wall is a reminder that the ocean is not separate from us. It connects us all. Hear directly from Tré about why this work matters, what we have learned from communities worldwide, and why projects like Sea Signals are so important in this moment. Watch, share, and follow the signals. 🌊🐚 Shot and edited by Sea Signals team member and hat friend @sofiya____r #SeaSignals #PangeaSeed #PublicArt #OceanConservation #Ōtautahi
Your code could shape the future of ocean exploration! We’re calling all data practitioners to dive into real data from an OceanXplorer mission. Together, you’ll dream up bold new ways to bring ocean science to life and rethink how we use ocean data. Your project can help build a clearer, deeper understanding of our ocean and empower the global marine science community with the data they need to drive conservation. Let's do this together. 👀 Did you know? The tiny filefish disappears into seagrass and drifting algae thanks to its perfect camouflage. Yet despite its charm, much about this miniature species remains unknown, from its early life to its role in coastal ecosystems. A small creature, and a big reminder of how much we still don’t know about the ocean. 🔵 To help fill these knowledge gaps, @ioc_unesco’s Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) ensures that biodiversity data is reliable, comparable, and trusted through a robust community‑based quality control process. Because high‑quality data is the foundation of stronger ocean science and more effective ocean action. As #UNGA80 opens, we celebrate 80 years since the founding of the @UnitedNations — a pillar of multilateralism and global cooperation. As one of humanity's greatest shared resources and covering 70% of the planet, the ocean is an inherently international space, showcasing the successes, needs, and challenges of global cooperation. Because of its sheer scale and complexity, no country can fully study and understand the ocean alone. That’s why, in 1960, 15 years after the founding of the United Nations, countries worked together to create UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), @ioc_unesco — the only UN body dedicated solely to ocean science and services. Since then, @ioc_unesco has played a key role in global #OceanScience cooperation, working across disciplines and borders to understand, measure, alert, evaluate, and manage the global ocean. In 2021, it was mandated to lead the #OceanDecade, and coordinates key Decade intiatives in critical areas of ocean science – from ocean observations to tsunami preparedness, ocean literacy, and more – such as: 🔵 Strengthening community resilience to tsunamis in the North‑East Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Connected Seas region with @coastwaveproject 🔵 Empowering the next generation of ocean leaders with @ecop_programme 🔵 Advancing research on ocean deoxygenation, and providing scientific advice for policies from local to global scales with the Global Ocean Oxygen Decade, guided by a world-leading group of scientists on ocean oxygen 🔵 Equipping @ioc_unesco Member States with the skills they need to make impactful ocean decisions and policies with the OceanTeacher Global Academy. 👉 Read more about these crucial ocean science initiatives in our latest 'Ocean Science in Action' story at the link in our bio. 👉 Visit @ioc_unesco to learn more about UNESCO-IOC. #UNGA #OceanScience #SDG14
