Here is one of Oregon's strangest claims to fame: a street you cannot drive down, because it goes straight up. 🛗 In Oregon City it is officially called Elevator Street, the only vertical street in all of North America. The old downtown is squeezed between the Willamette River and a ninety foot basalt cliff, so for years folks climbed 722 wooden stairs to get home. In 1915 the city opened a water powered elevator, and almost the whole town lined up to ride it. The sleek silver, flying saucer topped tower you see now went up in 1955, and the ride is still completely free. 🌲 We think that might be the coolest free ride in the state.
