Very informative and interesting post from @drmichaelhforde • Overtown was Miami’s Black Wall Street. Doctors, dentists, churches, schools, hotels, and nightclubs built by and for the Black community. It was called the “Harlem of the South.” Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald performed there. Thurgood Marshall and Mary McLeod Bethune stayed at the Mary Elizabeth Hotel. But in the 1960s, highways and “urban renewal” cut straight through the heart of Overtown. More than 12,000 Black residents were forced out. Landlords were underpaid. Renters, most of the community, got nothing. The population collapsed from 50,000 to 10,000 almost overnight. When you erase a community, you erase its health. Families lost homes, food security, trusted doctors, and neighborhood pharmacies. Displacement left stress, poverty, and illness in its wake - ripples that still affect Black Miami today. Overtown wasn’t destroyed by accident. It was policy. Remembering its story reminds us that public health isn’t just about hospitals - it’s about protecting the places where Black life can thrive. Yes, our beloved Miami Beach was once a “sundown town.” Meaning, no blacks allowed! 🚫 Ordinance 457 was enacted in 1936. This required colored folks to carry police issued identification. 🪪 Black people were STRICTLY prohibited from residing here, and were only permitted on the island to work. And they had to leave by sunset, or else face violence or arrest. (Typically both.) 🥴 Of course, black communities like Overtown (formerly “ColoredTown”) thrived out of necessity, segregation, and redlining practices. Creating their own sense of unity and prosperity, until gentrification and highway programs displaced those people too. 🤦🏾‍♂️ But that’s a whole ‘nother story. Before I-95, Overtown was the cultural capital of Black Miami. They called it the Harlem of the South. Count Basie played the Knight Beat. Ella Fitzgerald sang at the Mary Elizabeth Hotel. Muhammad Ali trained here. It was a thriving community of 40,000 people. Then in the 1960s, they built I-95 directly through the center of the neighborhood. 20,000 residents were displaced. Businesses were bulldozed. The community that powered Miami's nightlife was cut in half by concrete. County records show what happened next: property values collapsed, ownership transferred to absentee landlords, and decades of disinvestment followed. Today, Overtown is seeing new development — B+ in permits filed in the last 5 years. But the question is the same one Miami keeps asking: development for whom? The Lyric Theater is still standing.
