How to Handle Power Struggles in the Classroom (Without Losing Your Mind) Power struggles happen when a student feels out of control — and the worst thing we can do is match their energy. Here’s what actually works: 🔥 1. Stay calm — their storm doesn’t have to become yours. Your tone sets the temperature. Slow your voice, lower your volume, keep your face neutral. 🔥 2. Give choices, not demands. “Take out your notebook now” becomes “Would you rather start with your notebook or your warm-up sheet?” Choice = dignity + control. 🔥 3. Use the 3-second pause. Say it. Stop talking. Walk away. Power struggles die without an audience. 🔥 4. Acknowledge the feeling, not the behavior. “I hear you. You’re frustrated.” Validation drops defenses. 🔥 5. Redirect the energy. “I can help you when you’re ready.” It places responsibility back on the student — without the battle. 🔥 6. Win with connection, not control. Power struggles aren’t about the pencil, the seat, or the Chromebook. They’re about trust. When students feel safe, seen, and respected… compliance follows. Teachers don’t need more battles. We need more tools. ✨ And strategies like these change everything. ✨ #BehaviorBreakthroughs #ClassroomManagement #TeacherLife #PBIS #TraumaInformedTeaching #EducationTips #TeachingStrategies #ConnectionBeforeCorrection #MrJoshuaRuse

First, the program we’ve used to create sustainable and reliable systems is called Minga—it’s a digital hall pass, behavior management, and campus management system that helps free up your time, keep track of everything better, and get more targeted in your interventions. Data should be the driving force in every decision- whether its to praise or to provide an intervention or consequence. Remember, we're just using behavior strategies to turn the behavior around-for students to do what THEY SHOULD BE DOING! 🫶 Want to learn how to manage the behaviors within your classroom in an effective and sustainable manner? Calling for Support ≠ Failure — It’s Collaboration. When a student with an IEP is struggling with behavior, it’s imperative that classroom teachers call for support. That call isn’t a sign of weakness — it’s a sign of professional strength, understanding, and care. But here’s the other side: when support staff arrive, we must tread with intention. It’s just as important that we don’t stigmatize the student or treat the moment like “they’re here for me.” Every move, every glance, every tone sends a message — to the student, to their peers, and to the classroom community. That balance — between stepping in with support and maintaining the student’s dignity — is one of the hardest parts of inclusive education. But it’s also one of the most important. Because when we get it right, students feel seen, supported, and safe — not singled out. This is what real inclusion looks like: collaboration, compassion, and consistency. #InclusionMatters #InclusiveEducation #SpecialEducation #GenEdCollaboration #BehaviorSupport #TeamworkInEducation #CallForSupport #PositiveBehaviorSupport #LeastRestrictiveEnvironment #MeaningfulInclusion #TraumaInformedTeaching #BehaviorIntervention #RestorativePractices #PBIS #StudentCentered #DignityFirst #EquityInEducation #IEPGoals #InclusiveClassroom #EducationForAll #TeacherSupport #CollaborationOverIsolation #SupportNotStigma #WholeChildApproach #BehaviorIsCommunication #UniversalDesignForLearning #CoTeaching #SELInSchools #SPEDTeachers #EducationAdvocate

Spoiler alert. PBIS is powerful. But it is not a universal solution for every behavioral need. Tier 1 systems create structure. They create clarity. They create consistency. But when behavior is rooted in skill deficits, trauma, communication gaps, or unmet functional needs, incentives alone are not enough. We cannot reward our way out of missing skills. We cannot ticket our way out of regulation needs. We have to assess the function. We have to teach the replacement. We have to individualize support. PBIS is a foundation. It is not the whole framework. #PBIS #BehaviorSupport #FunctionMatters #SchoolLeadership #BehaviorChange

And most learners truly want to do well and avoid problems. But in the moment—when stress, frustration, or peer pressure shows up—good intentions don’t always translate into good decisions. Therefore, we created this short audio infographic to highlight a practical way educators can help learners strengthen decision-making when situations get intense. 🎧 Take a minute to listen. ⚠️ 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗿: This content is for educational purposes only.
