Yesterday was my birthday, and for @rhythmlabradio, we put together a special episode of 'parent records.' A B-side cut in Nassau in 1971. The men who made it had no idea what it would become. Twenty-one years later, it's the loop under "They Reminisce Over You." That's the whole show. Parent records: the songs underneath the songs you already love. Roy Ayers producing a Cincinnati band called RAMP in 1977, and A Tribe Called Quest building "Bonita Applebum" on top of that loop. "Right On For The Darkness," off Curtis Mayfield's Back to the World, sampled more than forty times since 1973. One Fred Wesley synth stab that turned into a hundred records. Hand drums out of Havana, drum machines out of Düsseldorf. Two records that met in the Bronx and became "Planet Rock." Sister Nancy's "Bam Bam" is one of the most licensed reggae records ever made, and she saw almost none of that money for decades. Circulation isn't payment. That one stays complicated. Then the last two records, and here's where the whole thing turns. Everything before them is a parent. A source. Something that got taken from. Prince and DJ Quik are the children, and they inherited it two completely different ways. Prince absorbed it. He took all that funk and soul into his body and played every instrument himself. No sampler, no loop, one man metabolizing an entire lineage and coming out the other side sounding like nobody else. And "She's Always In My Hair" is a B-side, which tells you exactly where the good stuff hides. DJ Quik took the other route. Compton, a sampler, somebody else's break chopped into something that belongs to him now. One kid swallowed his parents whole. The other one sampled them. Same inheritance, two different ways of carrying it. That's the point of the whole two hours.
