The AQI in Delhi is calculated based on the concentration of several harmful pollutants present in the atmosphere. These pollutants include PM2.5 (fine particulate matter), PM10 (coarse particulate matter), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O₃), and ammonia (NH₃). Among these, PM2.5 and PM10 are the most harmful because they are tiny particles that can enter the lungs and bloodstream, causing serious health problems such as asthma, lung disease, heart disease, and other respiratory issues.
In India, AQI is categorized into different levels to help people easily understand air pollution severity. An AQI between 0–50 is considered Good, 51–100 is Satisfactory, 101–200 is Moderate, 201–300 is Poor, 301–400 is Very Poor, and 401–500 is Severe. Unfortunately, Delhi’s AQI often reaches the Very Poor or Severe category, especially between October and January, when weather conditions trap pollutants close to the ground.
Several factors contribute to the high AQI levels in Delhi. One of the main causes is vehicular emissions from millions of cars, buses, and trucks on the roads. Industrial pollution, construction dust, and burning of crop stubble in nearby states like Punjab and Haryana also significantly increase pollution levels. During winter, low wind speed and temperature inversion prevent pollutants from dispersing, leading to thick smog covering the city.
High AQI levels have serious health impacts on Delhi’s population. People often experience breathing difficulties, eye irritation, coughing, throat irritation, and reduced lung function. Long-term exposure to polluted air can increase the risk of chronic respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems, and premature death. Children, elderly people, and individuals with existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable to these effects.
To control air pollution, the government has introduced several measures such as the odd-even vehicle rule.
