Parent support is different these days. IYKYK What's your parent support like at your school? Please share below! 👇🏻
Raise your hand if you wonder about this too? How can a child change if their therapist doesn’t see them throw a tantrum, get mad about their fruit being sliced wrong, or meltdown when another child hurts their feelings? Here’s my answer: ✅Parent support and coaching meetings. I provide regular parent meetings to help parents learn to co-regulate with their child, set limits, and de-escalate tantrums and meltdowns. This super individualized support helps parents process their experience of parenting their child and learn new skills for helping their child in tough moments. ✅ Practicing coping skills in a therapy session while a child is regulated helps make those skills more accessible for a child when they are activated/dysregulated. ✅ Play therapy allows children to communicate their internal experience through their play. Maybe the child uses the toys to show how activated they feel when a classmates hurts their feelings. Maybe the child creates a play scenario that sets up the therapist to feel helpless (just the child does in their life outside the playroom). ✅Healing and change happens in relationship! In the context of a safe, therapeutic relationship children can learn to accept their feelings, increase their self-esteem, learn to respond to boundaries. All of these things can, then, generalize to the rest of their life. The bottom line: a child does not have to meltdown during therapy to make progress. Any follow-up questions? Drop them in the comments or DM me :) 💖Are you looking for a play therapist for your child? I have TWO spots open and work with kids ages 3-12 in STL, MO. 🗣️Child has not yet started speaking and you are not able to help. 👀 Let’s look at what happens if you actually wait: Either child will outgrow the delay ✅ and start speaking or he will not ❌. If the child doesn’t outgrow then the delay will just keep increasing. This can affect the child socially, emotionally and academically. We don’t want that, right? Saddest part is, we cannot predict which child will outgrow this delay and which won’t. So, it is advisable for parents to learn stimulating (trying to make child speak) at home. ✨Many parents chose not to wait & actually worked on their children. Guess what? Their child’s delay got covered and they started speaking by the time they turned 3. Isn’t that amazing to know how parents themselves can bring about a change just by starting early. If you doubt that your child is lagging behind in communication skills, then do not ignore and try these: 📌 Limit screen time 📌 Start working on imitation skills (copying) : gestures (hand waving, hi-five and even smile is a response, making silly faces, playing peek-a-boo games) 📌 Encourage babbling/ speech sounds- aaaaa , eeeee, uuuuu or baba mama 📌 Do not discourage non verbal communication (pointing, gestures): label what your child points at (egs- oh! you want cookies 🍪) 📌 Try rhymes with actions 📌 Read with them 📌 Work on effective communication and not education 📌 Focus on functional words- give, take, yes, no, up, down, milk, banana, apple, biscuit, bed, door, shoe) 💯 Most importantly, consult a Speech Language Therapist for proper evaluation. You can take up parent guidance programs where a therapist guides you on the child’s problems and solutions. 💡 Parent Support/Guidance Programs are specifically designed for parents in an easily understandable way where parents are empowered to carry out speech stimulation at home step by step to make their child speak. 👋 I am Dr. Tanu, Paediatric Speech Language Therapist and Co-Founder of SIMBA SPEAKS and I welcome you to start your journey to make your child “ROAR with CONFIDENCE”. Common question I thought I’d address today! I find that communicating really well in the beginning can get you the parent support you’ll need. I also find that being unapologetic about your management system (in a kind way) is the way to go. This is your classroom, you are the expert, and you can’t teach if your class is running wild. Don’t apologize for having a clear system in place that gives you a way to actually teach. ❤️❤️❤️ Now which has been harder to deal with this year? Students or parents? 🥴
