The march began on October 26, 2025, with the goal of promoting compassion, nonviolence, and national healing across the United States.  The monks are walking to promote peace, compassion, and nonviolence, aiming to foster healing and unity in the United States, rather than engaging in protest or political campaigning. The group consists of about 20-24 monks from the Vietnamese Theravada tradition. They are walking through ten states, including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia, to reach Washington, D.C.. They have drawn massive crowds and widespread attention for their message of peace, often holding "peace sharing talks" during their, breaks.  The walk has amassed over 2.5 million to 3 million followers across Facebook and Instagram combined. Thousands of people have gathered in various cities and states to greet the monks, offer food, or walk with them for segments of the journey. For example, 20,000 well-wishers were reported in Columbia, South Carolina. As of early February 2026, the group is in Virginia, having marked over 100 days on the road.
