My 759th Reel: Here Lies Love, Again Thirteen years of #HereLiesLove and I’ve now seen this show at least 15 times - probably 9 times at the Public Theater, once at Seattle Rep Theater, and maybe 5 times on Broadway. Watching this beautiful and new reimagining at the Mark Taper Forum by @ctgla, with the show’s first Asian American director (@heysned), it has become one of those musicals that hits differently at various stages in your life. Watching this latest iteration, I was appreciative of how the lens has shifted in such a necessary way, with an intentional diversion from the disco glamour to a more overt call for political action. While I initially missed some original staging and choreography (mostly due to OG cast member friends teaching us choreo at parties), I enjoyed the newly inserted Filipino-isms and the time spent on relationships and character development. The incomparable @reanneacasio as Imelda was the perfect choice. Her vocals were powerful and her nuanced facial expressions captured the essence of a power-hungry pinay villain’s origin story. In fact, the addition of the new track, as well as more overt directorial and acting choices, resulted in less humanizing of Imelda and more truth-telling of history. The addition of @auramayari as the “Imeldific” drag queen (instead of the original DJ) was a brilliant queer touch that added a whole new layer to the narrative (while paying homage to the generations of subversive art and drag culture as protest during this time period). It’s less of a party and more of a visceral look at the cost of power, mental health, and the dangers of fascism. The portrayal of @itsjoanalmedilla as Aurora Aquino reminded us of the pinay mother we all need or desire, especially during times of grief & trauma. Finally, ending the show with a powerful call to action felt exactly right for the world we’re living in today. History does repeat itself, especially if we don’t fight against the powers that bring us down. Maraming salamat to the cast & crew for keeping the People Power spirit alive.
