In this exhibition, British contemporary pop artist Philip Colbert present his unique artistic interpretations of Mickey Mouse, in celebration of Disney‘s 100th anniversary. Born in Scotland and living and working in London, Colbert is often referred to as the “godson of Andy Warhol”. Graduating with an MA in Philosophy from the University of St.Andrews, Colbert has created a global following for his cartoon lobster persona and his masterful hyper pop history paintings, and has been championed by art world figures such as Charles Saatchi & Simon De Pury. PHILIP COLBERT’S FLAG FOR FUTURE Born in Scotland and living and working in London, Philip Colbert is often referred to as the “godson of Andy Warhol”. Colbert has created a global following for his cartoon lobster persona and his masterful hyper pop history paintings. His work powerfully explores the patterns of contemporary digital culture and its relationship to a deeper art historical dialogue. Graduating with an MA in philosophy from the University of St. Andrews, Colbert’s work has received international acclaim in museums and galleries worldwide for his energetic new approach to painting and pop theory. Following on from early pop painters such as Richard Rosenquist, Colbert’s paintings cross high art themes from old master paintings and contemporary art theory with everyday symbols of mass contemporary culture, all narrated through the eyes of Colbert’s cartoon Lobster alter ego. FLAGS FOR FUTURE is now on view! We’re showcasing flags from renowned artists during this third edition of the exhibition. Sneak Preview | 181st ART AUCTION: Philip Colbert 필립 콜버트의 작품 속 붉은 껍질의 바다 가재 랍스터는 작가의 페르소나로, 미술사와 현대 대중문화의 흐름을 목도하는 증인으로 항상 등장합니다. 이런 작가만의 아이콘은 살바도르 달리의 석고 플라스터 조형물 〈Lobster Telephone〉에서 영감을 받아 탄생했고, 과거부터 현재까지 주요한 미술사적 사건들이 시대를 대표하는 아이콘들로 상징되어 작가의 의도 하에 새로운 화면으로 구성됩니다. 출품작은 반 고흐의 방으로도 잘 알려진 〈Bedroom in Arles〉를 패러디한 것으로, 캔버스 3개를 이어 하나의 화면으로 구성했는데, 약 150호 크기의 대형작품 내 숨겨진 서로 다른 문화적 상징물들을 발견하는 재미가 쏠쏠합니다. 침대, 의자, 액자, 수건과 같은 사물들은 고흐의 화법을 그대로 가져와 두터운 마티에르와 여러 획을 연달아 그은 거칠지만 힘있는 선으로 표현되었고 파란 벽지와 분홍 카펫이 깔린 방 안에는 17세기 네덜란드 정물화로 대표되는 물병, 후기 인상주의를 대표하는 고흐의 책과 가구들, 초현실주의 사조를 이끈 마그리트의 파이프와 대중문화 속 인물들을 차용한 팝아트 거장 리히텐슈타인의 책이 곳곳에 자리하고 있습니다. 한 세기가 지난 고흐의 방에서 루이비통 모노그램이 그려진 트렁크를 두고, 노트북으로 과거의 시대를 검색하는 정중앙 해바라기 다발을 목에 두른 랍스터, 곧 작가인 그는 그가 만든 새로운 흐름의 중심에 서 있는 것입니다. In Philip Colbert's work, the red-shelled lobster serves as both the artist's persona and a witness to the evolving currents of art history and contemporary popular culture. Inspired by Salvador Dalí's iconic plaster sculpture “Lobster Telephone”, this unique symbol has become Colbert’s signature icon. By reimagining significant art historical moments through era-defining symbols, he constructs a vibrant and dynamic visual narrative. This piece is a playful parody of “Bedroom in Arles”, widely recognized as Van Gogh's room, reimagined across three connected canvases that form a single, large-scale composition (145 x 224.6 cm). Viewers are invited to enjoy the thrill of uncovering hidden cultural symbols within this expansive work.
