Named for its distinctively shaped skull, the flat-headed cat is one of the world’s most endangered and elusive felines. Weighing in at less than the size of a domestic cat, this species roams the swampy peat forests of their native Southeast Asia. To navigate their muddy habitat, these cats are equipped with claws that don’t fully retract and partially webbed paws! 🐾 #NatGeoExplorer and #PhotoArk founded @JoelSartore documented this flat-headed cat (Prionailurus planiceps) at the Taiping Zoo. Living in groups of up to 55 individuals, these monkeys spend most of their time foraging for their favorite foods—nuts and seeds. Video by @joelsartore | Despite this yellow-legged frog’s muscular appearance, the species is prone to flight over fight when faced with danger. When frightened, they'll dive to the bottom of a body of water and take refuge among stones or vegetation, remaining still until the threat has passed. Their ability to evade predators is further helped by their coloration, which usually blends well with the color of rocks and soil in their environment. Video taken @oaklandzoo . Millipedes are detrivores, which means that they feed on dead and decaying organic matter within their habitat. Once food is digested, these critters leave their nutrient-rich droppings all along the forest floor, creating new soil that helps plant life and other species that rely on the rainforest to thrive.
