Unpopular advice I give parents whose kids only eat beige food: Stop trying to force vegetables at dinner. I know that sounds backwards. But when every meal becomes about “just one bite of broccoli”, pressure creeps in. And pressure is exactly what keeps fussy eating stuck. Beige foods aren’t the enemy. They’re often predictable, soft, and safe for children who feel unsure around food. Instead of battling the beige… Start exploring vegetables outside of mealtimes. Try playful feeding-therapy ideas like: • Carrot toothbrushes – brush your teeth with carrot sticks • Veg scientists – squish, smell and rate the crunch • Veg builders – stack cucumber or pepper towers • Pea bowling – roll peas into a bowl • Sauce painting – paint toast with veggie dips No pressure to eat. Just touching, playing and exploring. Because expanding a diet doesn’t start with broccoli on the plate. It starts with curiosity and safety. HERE 👇🏼 Addressing your kids REAL reason for being picky will DRASTICALLY improve your kids eating Because picky eating is NOT the problem, it’s the SYMPTOM In other words - there’s a reason why they’re not picking up that broccoli and eating it 🥦 We get to be detectives to figure out why that is… There’s LOTS of reasons for it 😵‍💫 Over my years of practice working with parents of picky eaters I’ve narrowed the causes for picky eating down And I break it all down in my free class on reversing picky eating Want to learn the causes for free? Can’t believe just 6 months ago I was hiding vegetables in muffins/cookies and every dish possible. And now he’s asking for a side of vegetables and wanting to finish them off first before moving on to his main meals. It is true what they say, this too shall pass 🥲🥲 #toddlermum #pickyeaters #growinguptoofast❤️
And if you know me in real life, you know how much I hate strawberries. So this is brave if me 😂 But seriously, no one talks about how hard it is to provide a variety of tastes and textures to kids when as an adult you’re a picky eater!! All my adult picky eaters tell me your nightmare food in the comments 👇🏼 #pickyeaters #toddlermom #toddlermom #momof2
Picky eating can be frustrating but pressure, hiding/sneaking and bribes often back fire by creating distrust. Patience and empathy plus healthy modelling and frequent exposure is key. Before anyone comes for me, my kids DO love veggies, BUT.. when they have sore throats, they need something smooth and easy to swallow and this soup is perfect. Add chicken broth with veggies and cook until they’re soft, take your veggies out and blend your veggies with some broth and chicken bouillon paste. Add the smooth mixture back and mix. Serve with cooked pastina pasta. #soup #pickyeaters #soupseason #veggies #chickensoup
Have you heard of the “birthday party test” ? It’s a way that dietitian’s (like me!) get curious about how kids react at birthday parties when they are presented with A LOT of ‘junk’ foods that may be off-limits in many houses. Does your kid hyper-fixate and get overexcited about the food being served? Waits by the snack table munching the whole time? Asks for seconds (or even thirds of cake)? Overeats often and feels sick? If so, they are may be feeling overly restricted in there day to day life. They don’t have enough access to these “forbidden foods” and may even feel guilt or shame for wanting them 💔 The other group I see are those that are happy to have some snacks and cake, but are actually more interested in the games, balloons, activities, music and time with their friends. These foods aren’t forbidden at home and they likely have access to them regularly. This decreases there “specialness” and give them the freedom to enjoy all the other aspects of the party. They eat intuitively, listening to their body. If your kid is reacting more similarly to the first group, I mentioned I don’t want you to beat yourself up instead take this information and use it to implement some changes at home. Offer more ‘forbidden foods’ like chips, candy, cookies, cake. Randomly bring home a cake or cupcakes and let them have their fill. Offer dessert more often. This is how we help kids (and adults) lose the “last supper mentality”. The feeling that they better eat it now or they may not have a chance later. This is how we raise intuitive eaters ❤️ What kind of kid were you growing up? Do you have a picky eater who runs away from the table the second a new or non-preferred food is presented?! You’re not alone! But here’s the piece most parents miss: -Kids are much more likely to stay at the table when they see at least one familiar food on their plate! Not a separate meal. Not a backup dinner. Just one preferred food alongside the family meal. This small shift does a few important things: -lowers pressure -helps kids feel safe at the table -keeps them engaged with the meal -creates opportunities for exposure to new foods Think of it as an invitation to stay! Not a guarantee they’ll eat everything. And staying at the table is where progress starts. Comment “TABLE” if this reminds you of your child ❤️
Unpopular advice I give parents whose child screams “I don’t like it!” before even trying it Don’t ask them to try it. I know. That feels completely wrong and goes against your natural instinct. I have been there I know how hard it is. But when a child shouts “I don’t like it,” it’s usually not about taste. It’s often fear and that they feel unregulated. And the moment we push for a bite “just try it” “you haven’t even tasted it” “one bite for mummy” their nervous system goes straight into defence mode. Instead of chasing the bite… Lower the expectation. Try feeding-therapy style steps like: • Food builders – stack cucumber, carrot or pasta towers • let them serve the food onto your plate (they may even want to eat off your plate too) • Try just exploring the texture - squish, poke or mash the food with fingers like playdoh • Food rescue game you could rescue pasta or veggies from sauce • try a clear up routine with a favourite song on as it is the end of the meal there is no pressure to try the food • try a food challenge - I use to do the strictly come dancing food challenge with my little girl (there are lots more ideas on my posts too) Because children don’t learn to like foods by being pushed to eat them. They learn by touching, playing and exploring first. I got rid of this phrase👇🏽 And it’s going to shock a lot of people. I stopped saying: “You don’t have to eat it.” I always thought I was taking the pressure off, but I was actually signaling that the food was optional and probably gross. I was giving him an immediate out before he even tried. So for 30 days, we just stopped saying it. We put the food on his plate, talked about our day, and said nothing about what he was or wasn’t eating. The first week was honestly pretty rough. But then, something shifted. He started watching us eat. He started poking things with his fork. The silence made him curious instead of defensive. Removing that one phrase completely eliminated the dinner-time power struggle. And by the end of the month, here’s the list of what he tried without any prompting: bell peppers, celery sticks, and even a squash. If you’re struggling with this, give it a try and follow for more tips! #pickyeater #pickyeaters #pickyeating
