In the early 1970s, a young Englishman named Nick Drake made three quiet folk albums, mostly just his voice and an acoustic guitar. They are now regarded as some of the finest records of their kind ever made. At the time, almost no one listened. All three together sold only a few thousand copies. Reviews were lukewarm, sometimes unkind. Nick was gentle and painfully shy, so shy he could barely stand to perform live, and only a handful of photographs of him exist anywhere. His third album, Pink Moon, he recorded in about two nights, alone, in one take after another. Then he stepped away from music almost completely. The lack of success wore him down. He struggled with depression, and near the end he told his mother that he felt he had failed at everything he had ever tried to do. In 1974, he died. He was just 26 years old, convinced the world had no use for him. And that, for a long time, was the end of the story. Then, 25 years after his death, something strange and wonderful happened. A car company used his song Pink Moon in a television advert, a simple night drive under a clear sky. Millions of people heard that voice for the first time and went looking for whose it was. In a single week, Nick Drake sold more records than he had in his entire life. Today he is loved all over the world, named as an influence by countless musicians, spoken of as one of the great British songwriters. He just never got to know it.
