PONCE INLET PARADISE 🏝️ Check out these beautiful sandbars and crystal-clear water thanks to @ponceinletwatersports in @discoverdaytonabeach 😎 I rented a SUP and had an amazing time exploring the mangroves, spotting birds, watching dolphins, and soaking in the views of @ponce_inlet_lighthouse—Florida’s tallest lighthouse 😍 The real highlight was stepping off my board to explore a stunning sandbar just minutes from the @ponceinletwatersports launch. 🚨🌊🏗️ This massive pipe isn’t random, it’s part of @countyofvolusia ’s latest coastal protection project here in New Smyrna Beach, FL. 🏗️🌊 Sand is being dredged from a permitted site in the Intracoastal (Rattlesnake Island / DMMA) and pumped through pipelines like this to rebuild dunes and form a protective sand berm along miles of South NSB shoreline, starting near Sapphire Street. 🥅🏆 The goal is to replace sand lost to storms, cold fronts, and nor’easters, build a buffer to protect homes, roads, and infrastructure, stabilize dunes through reshaping and future vegetation, and ultimately buy time against erosion, not fix it forever. 🏨🌊 This isn’t a full resort style beach nourishment. It’s a defensive move, reinforcing what’s left after years of sand loss. The project spans several miles south of Sapphire Street and comes with an estimated $26 million price tag, largely funded by state and county dollars. 🧾 Here’s the local reality: sand moves, storms reshape everything, and without long term inlet and sediment management especially at Ponce inlet much of this sand will eventually end up right back in the system. 🏗️ 🌊 Still, this is what coastal protection looks like right now. FLORIDA ON A TANKFUL | The Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet has expanded its aviary and added a new education center. The aviary is home to birds recovering from injury or illness, and those that can no longer survive in the wild. Visitors get rare, up-close encounters with pelicans, gulls, owls, and other Florida wildlife. Inside the education center, visitors can meet snakes and gopher tortoises. The center has helped 19,000 birds since opening, and 28,000 reptiles, all while educating the public about conservation. The Marine Science Center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. #centralflorida #ponceinlet #marinesciencecenter #marinelife #wildlife #animals #florida #tankful

A reporter was on the scene at the inlet, speaking with local officials about the training, with rescue boats docked nearby and the beautiful Ponce Inlet waterway as a backdrop.
