Developing single leg balance is extremly important for improving glide during single leg support part of your stride ⛸️ Did you know that during forward skating is 90% of the time, almost full body weight on single skate ? 💁♂️

Body alignment over the leg you are about to push from maximizes explosive movement. Loading over the anchored leg provides enhanced efficiency and optimal speed gains quickly. Freshman @jakejaffe8 is working hard to increase foot speed without sacrificing power! Way to earn it, Jake!!

The Anatomy of a “Stop”
The stop is not the shave, and the shave is not the stop. “Coach, what are you even taking about, it’s called a hockey stop?” 🤷♂️
The action the blade takes to the ice in order to slow down the skater is a shave. The blade, running perpendicular to the direction of travel takes a very thin layer off the surface of the ice as the skater puts pressure into the edge through the front half of the blade (specifically under the ball of the foot). Don’t be fooled or misled by coaches who say you’re shaving/stopping with the flat of the blade - the EDGE, initially hitting the ice at a slight angle, is working to help you slow down so that, eventually, you will stop. But that’s NOT the actual stop…
The stop either comes when momentum is lost in the shave or, more appropriately, when, after initiating the shave, the angle is changed to such a degree that the edge will BITE the ice. The edge will then stick into the ice allowing that player to kill all momentum headed in the initial direction and eventually change direction and gain momentum once again.
“Duh, Coach…what a stupid break down. Why would we even need to know this?”
Because when you understand the physical principles and interactions of the tools and the surface on which you play the game, you can begin the work toward mastering the mechanics that will optimize your movement within the game.
