"ELEVAR LA CULTURA" NYC A 20ft golden Mayan Pyramid installation made out of coolers. What a humbling experience to create this monumental work in partnership with @theshedny open call and support from @powerhouse_arts subsidy program. We need solidarity, empathy and strength now more than ever. This installation will be a celebration and a reminder why this city and country are so special. The diverse communities that make NY and America an incredible home for many of us. The cooler has become a symbol for me, a symbol of strength, unity, and resilience among many people who come to this country for a better life. They often times begin their journey simply by selling goods , food , water, flowers from these coolers. We must protect the vulnerable and celebrate our humanity. With additional support We plan on bringing ELEVAR LA CULTURA to every sanctuary city. Open June 26 @theshedny Hudson Yards. Stay tuned for more!! 6 weeks of hard work condensed into 30 seconds! In June, I will exhibit arguably the most significant sculpture of my career with @powerhouse_arts. I am swinging for the fences conceptually, physically and technically with a 10’ tall Humpback whale fin alongside a calf fin. Pectoral fins look like underwater wings. However, they are used for life’s direction and not propulsion. Our present stands firm in the shadow of our future. Half way through my ceramics residency and I’ve already learned so much. Trying a new medium has brought out a new side to me and I’m learning to surrender to this new process. Over the past few weeks, I had the chance to teach Fugitive Marks: Memory, Identity & Material in Abstract at @powerhouse_arts — a class I built from the ground up, inspired by my own process of using found materials to hold memory. Over four weeks, we moved from the deeply personal to the collaboratively transformed. We started by asking how we carry stories that aren’t ours, then explored what it means to inherit someone else’s marks and build on them with care, using very limited tools such as a full session with only needle & thread. By the third session, our questions turned inward: What does the body remember after the mind forgets? What gestures do we repeat without realizing? How do materials mirror what we’ve lived through? It was humbling and honestly exciting to see these ideas come to life in the hands of such generous, curious artists.
