I prayed for many years before I realized there are 3 common mistakes that can not only weaken our prayers, but also damage our relationship with God. Honestly, most people are doing the second and third without even realizing it. First, don’t pray only when you are in trouble. If you believe God is your Heavenly Father, would you only go to Him when you are in trouble? It is like someone who never contacts you, but suddenly comes to you only when they need help. Would you really say that you have a good relationship? In the same way, God does not want us to remember Him only when we have nowhere else to turn. He is not only the God we seek in times of trouble. He is also the Heavenly Father who loves you. So don’t pray only when you need something. Come before Him even when everything is going well. You will gradually realize that prayer is not just about asking God for things. It is about building a real relationship with your Heavenly Father. Second, don’t neglect quiet time. Many times, as soon as we say “Amen,” we pick up our phones and go back to what we were doing. But after praying like this, we often feel that we cannot sense God’s response. After you pray, take some time to be quiet. Put your phone down, calm your heart, and meditate on God’s Word. Then you will be able to recognize God’s voice more clearly. Third, don’t turn prayer into bargaining with God. Don’t say, “Lord, if You heal me, I promise I will go to church regularly from now on.” There is nothing wrong with boldly asking God for what you need, but true faith is not about making a deal with God. It is about surrendering yourself to Him. Even in His most painful moment, the Lord Jesus prayed, “Nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done.” — Luke 22:42 Submitting to God’s will—that is true faith.
