Advocacy in action! 💙
We are proud to share that our Executive Director, Cass Burkett, spoke at the recent Commissioners Meeting to support declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Jefferson County.
This is what dedication looks like—standing up, speaking out, and working toward a safer, healthier future for children in our community. At CARES, we are honored to have a team so deeply committed to healing and justice.

💙APRIL IS NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION AND AWARENESS MONTH💙
According to Prevent Child Abuse America, "April is Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Month, a time for communities nationwide to come together and take action to support strong families, thriving children, and healthier communities. This year, we unite under the theme “POWERED BY HOPE, STRENGTHENED BY PREVENTION”, recognizing that when families have the right support, they can build a brighter future for their children. Through advocacy, education, and community engagement, we can work together to prevent child abuse before it ever happens."

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Small acts of kindness can make a huge difference for a child. Reach out, listen, and support—every child deserves to thrive. 🎈🚸
Child Abuse Prevention Programs work because they give parents and children practical help early, so problems like stress, isolation, and unsafe situations don’t spiral into abuse.
These are the Child Abuse Prevention Programs we currently offer in our community:
• Training with Impact: A prevention training for staff, partners, and community collaborators to build a stronger referral network for families so together we can reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect.
• Self-Esteem Building Workshop: This workshop promotes self-esteem and resilience among young readers. Through June 2026, our Prevention Team will be touring all seven branches of the Newark Public Library, offering this empowering program to the public.
• Community-based Caregiver Training: A 5-week program, offering caregivers tools and support to strengthen family bonds and cope with everyday challenges.
• Know and Tell Trainings: We train caregivers and all adults to know the signs of child abuse, that we’re all mandated reporters in NJ, and when to make that call to report. We answer questions like these: Will I be identified if I call it in? Do I need proof to call in suspected child abuse or neglect?
If you'd like us to bring these programs to your agency or organization, email Chris Ann, Director of Prevention Services at

I urge you to speak up when something feels wrong, support the families around you, and help raise awareness throughout April. Together, we can protect children and prevent these tragedies before they begin.
Yesterday marked the start of Child Abuse Prevention Month—a time to raise awareness, stand together, and commit to protecting our children. 💙
“Child abuse is 100% preventable when the community comes together … true prevention means education so that it doesn't happen in the first place,” says Family Enrichment Center Board Chair Kim Wilson.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month—a time to recognize the importance of safe, supportive communities for every child.
At the Maryland Children's Alliance (MCA), we work year-round to strengthen Maryland’s response to child abuse by supporting all 24 Child Advocacy Centers. Through collaboration, training, and advocacy, we help ensure children and families receive the care they need, when they need it most.
Together, we can create a Maryland where every child feels safe, supported, and heard.
