Print process - Miner No.8 This series helps me develop styles for larger prints whilst also exploring a growing collection of ghosts, faces and personalities. I wanted to capture a print brother/cousin to my "Black Cap" painting. Villages were made up of close family networks. Often you'd find out that you were a cousin of a cousin of an aunt of a nephew. "Nigel over there is your second cousin twice removed". We smiled and nodded on the high street. Not sure we ever talked. OUR PRINT PROCESS ✨🖐️ Block printed by hand through an ancient process that is family run and passed down through generations, our textiles are truly made one at a time. For us, the design process is all about mixing up the beautiful prints to create wonderful pattern play. Most of our dresses combine 3-7 prints per dress with added custom borders. I’m pretty sure I was a Blockprinter in one of my past lives. For 15 years, I have studied & yearly executed Dabu (mudresist works) on the ground in India - the Print process, the Block designs, the natural Dyeing, the Fabrics - what works best, how to overcome the ordinary! Because I am an Artist through and through, the involved process in this design work is its own reward! I take great pleasure in my annual pilgrimage of working side by side with my family of generational printers @dabu_dera1 working through new ideas freely, playfully, being present in the studio, doing the printing, doing the dying since that is where I improvise and that is where I innovate directly. So when “industry”just grabs my ideas and sells them out that’s all ok (& unavoidable in India actually) but actually they lose out because the creative gains that I get from the evolution by self, arriving at these special moments as shown here is the greatest gift - not just running with somebody else’s idea and throwing it out on the market. That is biggest loss for others, for me it is my constant challenge to keep innovating -to keep moving forward with a fresh mind and open heart. I feel my work speaks for itself over the years.
