“But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” Psalm 86:15
Psalm 86 is a prayer of King David crying out to God in the middle of struggle, weakness, and enemies surrounding him.
Yet in the midst of it all, David reminds himself of who God truly is
This verse reveals the very heart of God. He is not impatient with us. He is not waiting for us to fail. He is merciful, meaning He withholds the punishment we deserve. He is gracious, meaning He gives love and help we could never earn.
He is slow to anger, patient with our weakness and continual turning back to Him. And He abounds in steadfast love and faithfulness, meaning His love is not temporary or emotional, but constant, covenantal, and true.
The Psalms themselves are a collection of inspired prayers, hymns, cries, worship, repentance, and trust written throughout salvation history. They teach us how to pray honestly before God in joy, suffering, fear, gratitude, confusion, and hope.
This is why the Psalms are deeply rooted in Catholic prayer life and are prayed daily in the Liturgy of the Hours by priests, religious, and laity throughout the world.
The Psalms remind us that prayer is not about pretending to be perfect before God. It is about bringing our hearts before the One who is perfectly faithful.

A verse has been on my mind lately: “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.” — Psalm 133:1
ㅤ
In a world full of division, that kind of unity can feel far off, but it’s exactly what God calls us to. One way we can come together is by helping those in need.

God I’m sorry for anything I put before You
When I felt You speaking to me and I didn’t stop to listen
When You showed me something and I just looked away
Well I’m looking now
Create in me a clean heart
Renew a right spirit in me
Don’t take Your spirit from me Lord
Help Me remember the joy of knowing You

Psalm 34:18 (NKJV)
“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.”
God is not distant from those who are suffering. When the heart is broken—through grief, repentance, loneliness, or struggle—the Lord draws near. The world often tells us to hide weakness and pain, but before God a broken and humble heart is precious.
A contrite heart is one that recognizes its need for God. It is the heart that cries out in prayer, that seeks mercy, and that turns back to Him with sincerity. In these moments, when a person feels most fragile, the presence of God can become most real.
The saints often speak about the blessing of a broken heart because it softens the soul. Pride begins to fade, humility grows, and the person learns to depend completely on God. What seems like weakness in the eyes of the world becomes the doorway to grace.
The Lord does not abandon those who are struggling. He stands close to them, ready to heal, comfort, and restore the soul.
St. Isaac the Syrian said:
“A broken and humbled heart God will not reject.”
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.
