This is something you don’t see every day in the Puget Sound 😳 Two massive Steller sea lions were spotted taking over a small sailboat near Olympia, leaving it visibly tilted under their weight 🦭 #DUBSEA 🎥: ultradane on X

This was a first for me today. My husband picked up a buoy and what looked like algae was actually moving. They are Japanese skeleton shrimp, Caprella mutica, an invasive amphipod sometimes nicknamed the praying mantis of the sea because of the way they grip and ambush prey. Native to the northwest Pacific, they were introduced to Puget Sound in the 1970s, likely through aquaculture and ship hull fouling. They reproduce quickly, grow larger than native skeleton shrimp, and often outcompete them on docks and marina structures. Super cool to see up close, just wish they were not here. #SalishSea #MarineBiology #InvasiveSpecies #PugetSound #Ecology
1️⃣ Normal sunsets Once you experience summer evenings here, regular sunsets feel early. When the sky stays light until almost 9 or 10 PM, you realize how much life you can fit into a single day. 2️⃣ Needing water nearby This was something I didn’t expect. Lakes, rivers, Puget Sound… water is everywhere here. Now if I go somewhere and there’s no water within driving distance, it feels strange. 3️⃣ Having only one type of weekend One thing I didn’t expect was how many options there are. You can hike in the mountains, grab coffee in a small town, sit by the water, or head into the city all in the same day. Once you get used to that variety, places with only one thing to do start to feel repetitive. 4️⃣ Not caring about seasons Washington made me appreciate the rhythm of the year. Spring blooms, summer lake days, fall colors, cozy winters. It breaks the year up in a way that makes life feel less like one long blur. 5️⃣ Scenic drives being normal In a lot of places you have to plan a road trip for good views. Here it’s just part of daily life. Mountains in the distance, water nearby, forests everywhere. 6️⃣ Expecting good coffee everywhere Washington coffee culture is real. Local stands on corners, small shops everywhere, people who actually care about a good cup. Now mediocre coffee feels unacceptable. 7️⃣ Having quick escapes One thing I’ve come to appreciate most is how easy it is to reset. Mountains, islands, lakes, small towns… even a short drive can completely change the scenery and the pace of your day. So if you’re just starting your search to relocate to Washington, the first thing you’ll want to get clear on is which area makes the most sense for your family. Arlington?Lake Stevens? Redmond? Lynnwood? No worries. DM or comment the word “GUIDE” and I’ll send you what I wish we had when we made the move. My blueprint to Washington’s Most Popular Areas where you’ll see the population, median age, home prices, income levels, public school ratings, and more for some of the most popular places to live in Washington.

Fun Fact Friday 🌊 we live surrounded by water in Edmonds, but saltwater stings Harper’s skin and cold temps make it unsafe for her body to regulate. no ocean swims !!! no jumping in the puget sound !!! pools and hot tubs only. 💙 it changes how we vacation. it changes what we plan. but it never changes her JOY !!!! different doesn’t mean less. ✨ &&& shoutout to @super.smalls for the dope googles. . . . #funfactfriday #harlequinichthyosis #adaptive #shareyourstory #rarediseaseawareness

Kicking off year 3 of the oyster farm 🦪🦪🦪 This is part one of a series detailing all the stuff that went into expanding our hobby farm. In this first part, I show off the new baby oysters (aka “spat”) and clams we got, and talk about our success from the first two years of this adventure. Shout out to the supportive people at both @taylorshellfish and @girlsthatshuck! #oysters #oysterfarm #clams #shellfish #girlsthatshuck #pnw #pugetsound #oystergirl #girlsthatshuck #shuckyeah
