Today is ANZAC Day in Australia. As all Australians know, it is a day marking the history of Australian and New Zealand soldiers taking part in a wartime expedition in the Gallipoli peninsula that set out on the 25th of April 1915. It has since become a day to reflect on the loss of human life during war and to honour returned and serving servicemen and women.
While a sprig of rosemary has traditionally been worn by Australians on this day (this plant grew wild on the Gallipoli peninsula and it is also an ancient symbol of fidelity and remembrance), the Red Poppy has become a symbol used to mark this day as well. It was adopted as a symbol of hope for a peaceful future in the aftermath of World War I .
In honour for the hope of worldwide peace and to acknowledge the immense sacrifice and heartbreak caused by all who have been lost due to the horror of war, and for those who are left behind - Lest We Forget.
