Assigning R/S descriptors feels easy—until this structure shows up on an exam. The good news? The rules don’t change. Start at the stereocenter. On the first level, it’s attached to S, O, C, and C. Priority is straightforward here: • Sulfur = priority 1 • Oxygen = priority 2 Now compare the two carbons. You can’t stop at “they’re both carbon”—you have to look one bond further. • The top carbon is attached to one carbon and two hydrogens. • The bottom carbon is attached to a hydrogen, a real carbon, and a phantom carbon from the double bond. That gives the bottom carbon priority 3, and the top carbon priority 4. With priorities set, trace 1 → 2 → 3. The lowest priority group is on a wedge pointing toward you, so the sense is reversed. The result? R configuration. Same rules, just applied carefully. #organicchemistry #stereochemistry

This clip is from Chemmunity's Infrared Spectroscopy of Carbonyl Groups video. This video covers the IR values you'll need to know when identifying functional groups with a carbonyl group. We'll go over examples of IR spectras of an anhydride, acid chloride, ester, carboxylic acid, aldehyde, ketone, primary amide, secondary amide and tertiary amides. Watch this full video (Lesson: Infrared Spectroscopy of Carbonyl Groups) and hundreds more on all the Organic Chemistry topics you need only on Chemmunity.com #organicchemistry #study #premedmotivation #ochem #premed
