YOU GUYS PLEASE DON’T BE THIS PERSON I BEG 😭😭😭 I get it, books can be expensive, but it’s been absolutely breaking my heart recently seeing how many authors have found their work online for “free” or used to train AI—especially when there are SO MANY WAYS to read ebooks or listen to audiobooks that don’t actively hurt authors! Resources like @libby.app and @hoopladigital are SO easy to use, and there’s yet to be a book I wasn’t able to request and read. Libraries are great about listening to patrons and getting access to what readers want, so if you aren’t seeing what you’re looking for, it’s always worth putting in a request or talking to your local librarian! I’ve also been able to read so many of my most anticipated new releases on @netgalley and there are TONS of great books posted as “read nows” that don’t even require a request!! And if classics are your vibe, I’m a massive fan of Project Gutenberg, which has over 75,000 free ebooks, all of which are in the public domain! I’m a firm believer that everyone should have the right to read, but to quote one of my favorite authors @rebeccafkenneybooks : Reading is a fundamental human right. Reading the popular books everyone else is reading is NOT a right…You can always find something to read for free. I made this quick DIY flip book to help my son practice CVC words and he’s been having so much fun blending sounds. To create this, I cut a small notebook into 3 equal sections. In the middle spot, write the vowels. In the first & third spots, write a variety of constants. Then just FLIP & READ to make a brand-new word. Simple, hands-on, and actually teaches the skill. Some of the words are REAL & some are NON SENSE words. This is very helpful for beginning readers because it forces them to use letter sound knowledge to accurately sound out & blend the word together to read. Activities like this are key when kids are learning to read. If they can master blending CVC words, they’re on the path to reading with confidence. This is just one of the strategies I used as a kindergarten teacher and now I use them with my own kids.
