The Cincinnati Reds: A Legacy Written in Red🇺🇸⚾
The story of the Reds is the story of professional baseball itself. It begins in 1869 with the original Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first openly all-professional team, who went undefeated in their first 81 games . While that team dissolved, the modern franchise we know today was founded in 1882 as a member of the American Association, joining the National League in 1890 where they’ve remained ever since.
The team’s first World Series championship in 1919 is forever linked to one of the sport’s darkest moments: the Black Sox Scandal . Although the Reds defeated the Chicago White Sox, the title was tainted by allegations that eight White Sox players conspired to throw the series.
After a resurgence led by pitching stars Bucky Walters and Paul Derringer, the Reds claimed their second World Series title in 1940, defeating the Detroit Tigers.
But the franchise’s golden era arrived in the 1970s. The legendary “Big Red Machine,” managed by Sparky Anderson and featuring Hall of Famers Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Tony Pérez, and Cincinnati native Pete Rose, dominated baseball . They won back-to-back World Series championships in 1975 (a classic series against the Boston Red Sox) and 1976 (a sweep of the New York Yankees), cementing their place as one of the greatest teams in history.
The Reds’ most recent championship came in 1990 as a total surprise. The “Wire-to-Wire” champs, led by Barry Larkin and the “Nasty Boys” bullpen, swept the heavily favored Oakland Athletics . After a long playoff drought, a new generation of stars like Joey Votto brought postseason baseball back to the banks of the Ohio River in the 2010s.
Today, with a bright young core featuring Elly De La Cruz, the Cincinnati Reds continue to build on their rich history at Great American Ball Park, chasing their first World Series title in over three decades.

Before the Big Red Machine, the Reds had a strikeout ace. ⚾
Jim Maloney dominated the 1960s with monster seasons—going 23–7 with 265 strikeouts in 1963, winning 20 games in 1965, and piling up strikeouts year after year.
At just 21 years old, he even pitched in the 1961 World Series against the Yankees.
A ruptured Achilles in 1970 cut his career short before he could join the legendary Big Red Machine dynasty—but his impact in Cincinnati was undeniable.
Maloney finished with 134 wins, a 3.19 ERA, and was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1973.

In 1961, the Reds won the pennant. Reds Hall of Fame Pitcher Jim O'Toole went 19-9 with a 3.10 ERA and threw 254 innings. The @rosie_reds originated three years later and are still active today rooting on and supporting the @Reds. #Reds
