This summer, three endangered red panda cubs were born at the Smithsonian's Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia. Twin cubs arrived to three year old mom Sequoia on May 29 (dad is 12 year old Mow Mow), and less than two weeks later, three year old Keahi gave birth to a single female cub, sired by seven year old Rocket. Keepers are watching all three through nest box cameras so they can check in without stressing the moms out. Right now the babies are pretty much just tiny balls of fur that eat and sleep, according to the team caring for them. Which, honestly, relatable. They're not bears. They're basically their own weird, wonderful branch of the animal kingdom that just happens to also love bamboo. Those reddish "tear mark" patterns running from their eyes down to their mouth are believed to have evolved to help block sunlight from their eyes. Even their signature red and buff ringed tail has a job. They use it for balance while climbing, and they wrap it around themselves like a built in blanket to stay warm. Now here's the part that turns this from a cute post into an important one. There are fewer than 10,000 mature red pandas left in the wild. The species is officially listed as Endangered. And cub survival isn't guaranteed, not even close. Around 40 percent of red panda cubs don't make it, which is exactly what happened at the Santa Barbara Zoo just weeks ago, when a second cub born there this summer passed away after losing its sibling earlier in July. So when a birth like the one in Virginia gets announced, it's not just a nice headline. It's genuinely a big deal for a species that doesn't have a lot of room for error. Part of why they're struggling is where they live. Almost half of the red panda's remaining habitat is in the Eastern Himalayas, and the loss of nesting trees and bamboo forest there is a major driver of their decline. These aren't animals that only exist behind glass at a zoo.
