Nothing gives perspective of the climate crisis and the drought in Arizona than placing yourself in the natural world over time. In 2006 I paddled the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon and saw the water lines left high up on the cliff sides from how high the water used to be. That was twenty years ago. I was gutted by the realization. These videos were taken six years apart in Antelope Canyon, accessed from Lake Powell. In 2019 I paddled so far into the canyon that I put down my paddle and used my hands to push me along to the shore, my kayak scraping both walls of the slot canyon. I kayaked so far into the slot canyon I had to turn my boat up on end to turn it around to go back out. This year I returned, and was met with drastically lower water levels and dead fish everywhere, due to an algae bloom (caused by rising heat warming the water. The algae bloom increased after our trip and NPS declared Antelope Canyon’s water toxic due to rapidly growing bacteria in July. Warming water causing algae blooms is also what is killing the krill in our seas, and why Blue Whales have stopped singing due to starvation.) I am lucky to have these experiences in the natural world. I could also share about the horrifying sound glaciers make as they melt, because I have been there too. I have this growing dread that I won’t be able to take my children to witness the same wonders I have witnessed because humans are actively destroying it all. And at this rate I fear we will also live to see the day that Tucson becomes a ghost town. Feeling bleak.
