Nap all the time. Roar, occasionally. The jaguars, Caipora & Saban, swapped habitats for the first time this week! Swapping their habitats provided a new form of enrichment as both got to explore a new place, with new scents and features. They will continue to swap habitats periodically and we can't wait to see Caipora go for her first swim!

A new episode of CheetahTV premieres today at 1 PM EST - and this week, host Brian Badger is chatting with wildlife educator, content creator, and zookeeper Jordan Veasley, also known as Jungle Jordan (@junglejordan23)! While on your tour, you may notice some suspiciously dog-toy shaped items in our cheetah enclosures. As it turns out, dog toys make great enrichment for cheetahs, as demonstrated in this throwback footage of a 2021 cub. Like with any enrichment, it is up to the individual if they want to engage with it or not. If they're uninterested, our carnivore care team has plenty of other items and activities that add to the natural enrichment provided by the enclosures themselves.

Have you ever seen tiger training during a zoo visit? It’s tiger-ific! 🐯 Animals across the zoo often voluntarily participate in training sessions, helping them build trust and strengthen their bond with their dedicated care teams. By practicing behaviours like showing their teeth, lifting a paw, or following simple cues, they make routine health procedures — like weight checks, injections, or visual inspections — safer and less stressful for everyone. Recently, our male Amur tiger ‘Vasili’ worked with Animal Care Technician Kevin. Using clear gestures and a baton with a red target ball, Kevin guided Vasili to crouch, stand, and follow directions. Each correct response from this carnivorous cat earned a tasty piece of meat, reinforcing trust and positive experiences. 😋 Training moments like this go a long way in ensuring our animals feel safe and comfortable when receiving care. Thank you to our wonderful Animal Care, Health & Welfare team for making a paw-sitive difference in their lives every day! 🫶 #YourZooYYC #AnimalWellbeing #Enrichment

PART 2 OF 2: GABRIEL☀️ The recent heatwave across parts of the Western Cape had our Mr Charming Gabriel feeling the heat too! 🐆 Thanks to @ashia_cheetah_conservation in Paarl, Gabriel has been kept cool with access to: 💦 Water sprayers inside his habitat. 🌳 Plenty of shade. 💧 Constant access to fresh water. 🛌 Quiet, cozy spots to relax during the hottest hours. In this video, you will also see him lying down and panting, which is a natural way for leopards to help regulate their body temperature. ❄️ And then, the ultimate hot weather treats: ❄️ “Blood-cicles”, frozen blood treats to savour and beat the heat. 🧊 Scented ice, like a big cat slushie (or a ‘slush puppie’ for South Africans)! These frozen treats are not just delicious, they are also enrichment. By adding scents and treats into the ice, it encourages natural behaviours like exploring and hunting. This helps keep both Gabriel and Pardus active, stimulated and healthy while staying cool. (And if you listen closely, you’ll hear Gabriel asking where his dinner is!)😄 A big thank you to Ashia for helping our boy beat the heat. Cooling off has never looked so cool! 💛🐾 #pantheraafricabigcatsanctuary #ethicalsanctuary #inunitythereisstrength #ashiacheetahconservation #gabriel

Years of working with animals means sometimes just a look in their eyes tells me what they’re about to do next. In this case, I disturbed Khan’s slumber while chuffing at him and he gave me the “look,” which happens before the pounce lol 🐯💤 #tiger #bigrunwolfranch #chicagoland #wildlife #bigcats

Cuteness overload 🥰 I love getting to spend time with the (not so little anymore) girls. Lulu was happy to hang out with us this rainy afternoon 🩷 Sound up for sweet purrs!
