This is one of my favorite visible mending tricks because it actually saves clothes that don’t fit anymore while adding a little creativity to your wardrobe.
Mending clothes instead of replacing them is one small way we can reduce textile waste and keep our favorite pieces longer.
If you want to start visible mending, I make Stick & Stitch guides and beginner-friendly tools to help you repair your clothes with simple embroidery.

When a run-in with a pothole helps you appreciate the value of #mending. You might not feel its power until you experience its absence, but all great creations fall apart without the accompanying acts of repair and tending. I think mending has a lot to teach us, despite, or perhaps even because of its sometimes-impracticality.
My daughters got these matching dresses as a gift and the seams all started falling apart at the same time. They’ll probably outgrow them soon, and anyway, they’re so cheap it would be easier to toss them and order a cheap replacement. But what does that train em to do? Wha happens instead when I give myself to slow, patient work if making it better, accepting the imperfections inherent in mending: it won’t be a precise replica of the original.
Why don’t you try it for yourself and see what happens?

This rainbow sweatshirt was starting to peel, which is usually the beginning of the end for kids’ clothes.
But instead of throwing it away, I stitched over the rainbow using neon zigzag stitching to secure the print and added little teddy fleece clouds at each end. ☁️
A tiny repair turned into a tiny fairytale ending.
Clothes don’t always need replacing… sometimes they just need a bit of imagination and a sewing machine. 🧵

A not-so-quick mending task. I wear a base layer nearly every single day in the winter. I am always cold 🥶. I noticed a ring broken on my strap slider/ring on this camisole. After lots and lots of unpicking and a challenging task of rethreading the strap through the slider, this was worth it. It's not my neatest mend or stitching, but as a base layer, I have no issue wearing it!!

Highly recommend visible mending. So fun, so rewarding, so sustainable.
...and now its time for yard work. ☺️

[ad] I recently got to meet Taija from @fabpatch , who very kindly gave me personal demo of their super cool repair patch. She described it as a BandAid for your clothes: there's no sewing or ironing involved, you just peel off the backing and rub it for one minute... and you're done. (You can use any smooth object for the rubbing - I thought it would be fun to use one of my vintage darning mushrooms.)
Don't ask me how it works, I haven't got a clue. There may be some science involved, but it seems equally likely that it's just magic.
@prym.europe sent me some patches from their collaboration with FabPatch, so I'm now on a mission to try them out! (It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it...)
