Sharing a wholesome project and coverage documented back in January. Indigenous children dressed as painted characters made from cardboard and volunteers march during the @awas_mawas parade at the outskirt of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Awas Mawas project culminated in a vibrant puppet parade featuring indigenous children from Kampung Orang Asli Pulau Kempas, showcasing their cultural heritage through storytelling and performance.
Supported by a team of local artists, Artivist @shaqkoyok_art , sculptor @williamkoong_ , multimedia artist @fairuzsulaiman , and other creatives have been working since September 2024, the initiative celebrates Temuan folklore and harnesses the power of art to amplify their voices and shed light on the challenges their community faces due to ongoing developments impacting their homeland and to ensure these traditions aren’t lost.

Scenes from the Ashaninka village of San Miguel Centro Marankiari, “Land of serpents,” in Peru’s central
Amazon.
As a child, Tsonkiri Samaniego’s father, a tobacco shaman, would tell him bonfire legends about forest deities and fabled hunting grounds in the jungles that once cloaked the Perene Valley, ancestral home of the Ashaninka tribe. Today, forests have been supplanted by citrus plantations, and the animals have disappeared. Depleted soils and sparse rains no longer sustain cassava crops. The village’s landless youth are migrating to cities, where their language and lore are fated to slip away.
Amid these threats, community founder, Tsonkiri Samaniego (voice in this piece), and his community are fighting for their cultural survival — conserving the remaining forests, safeguarding plant knowledge, transmitting ancestral music, and most importantly, preserving their Ashaninka language, which underpins everything — including their connection to the natural world as it lurches toward unsettling transformation.
Stay in touch with more stories and images from Ashaninka territory.

Congratulations to Jozef Macak @jozef_macak_photo second place winner of AAP Magazine 52 Street with the series 'Tides of life'
This series traces the uneasy intimacy between people and water. A relationship marked by necessity, resilience, and quiet harm. Across Bangladesh, rivers reflect this same tension: lifelines turned fragile, ecosystems pushed to the edge. This series offers a glimpse into that reality where water nourishes and betrays, and where its spirit persists against the slow ache of environmental neglect.

The golden light spills over the rooftops of Kibera as the sun begins to awaken the day. Every morning, the bustle of residents heading for the hustle is an imbalance of footsteps and chatter.
