Resource Guarding in Dogs is Dangerous, especially when it comes to children! Children are face level with dogs, causing them to be even more threatening to dogs than adults. 2. **Children’s Lack of Awareness** - Children may not recognize the warning signs of resource guarding, such as growling, stiff body posture, or intense staring, and may unknowingly provoke the dog by approaching or attempting to take the guarded item. 3. **Inconsistent Behavior Around Adults vs. Children** - Dogs may tolerate certain behaviors from adults but feel more threatened by children, who are smaller, less predictable, and may move or act in ways that the dog perceives as a threat. 4. **Children’s Impulsive Actions** - Children might react impulsively, like trying to grab a toy or food from a guarding dog, which can escalate the dog’s guarding behavior into a bite or other aggressive response. Preventing Risks: - Supervise all interactions between children and dogs. - Teach children appropriate ways to interact with dogs. - Train the dog to reduce guarding behaviors through positive reinforcement and professional guidance.#dogbehavior #kidsanddogs #resourceguarding #anxiousdog #reactivedog
Look at this footage. These dogs are sitting close to each other, clearly unhappy, and not able to deal with sharing their personal space. Yelling "hey" breaks the stress cycle for a moment but will never resolve this issue long-term. This stress situation is only going to get worse unless someone actually knows what to do, so the stress can be released in a healthy, calm way and the dogs build resilience. To make this situation even worse, these dogs are siblings. Raising sibling dogs without extreme structure is one of the worst things you can do; it is a guaranteed recipe for massive fights and severe aggression as they get older. Getting your phone out and going "hey, hey, hey" is not how you solve severe stress situations ever. You are putting your dogs and yourself in danger. You need to guide them to calmness, give the right example, and teach them what they should do instead. Are you currently filming the warning signs instead of fixing them? Comment "QUIZ" below to instantly test the urgency level of your dog's behavior right now. Stop recording the red flags and start helping.
Yes, Duke will snap if he is pushed too far but he is getting so much better. He was given up because of this behavior. At almost 11 years of age, we have decided to work WITH him rather than scold him which does NOT work. This approach is working out really well but it took time to realize how to handle it. The only time he will guard an object is when it is on his bed or nap mat. He is a sweet boy otherwise! 💕💕💕💕💕💕#goldenretriever #goldenretrievers_ofinstagram #seniordogsrule #rescuedogs #seniordogs #seniordogrescue #goldenretrieverlovers #rescueddogsofinstagram #resourceguarding
Resource guarding is a very common issue in dogs. In a nutshell, it’s when a dog uses aggressive behaviors to maintain position of a resource, or to take a resource (this is more rare). While some resource guarding is normal (especially as boundary setting between dogs) some guarding is abnormal or dangerous. Stay tuned for some info and tips. #dogbehavior #dogtraining #resourceguarding #dog aggression #aggressivedog
You lead. You decide. You protect the resources. The puppy learns that being with you is safe and rewarding. Teach your puppy to accept touch, handling and control. If a puppy doesn’t learn this early, problems will grow as the dog grows. #puppylife #resourceguarding #workingpuppy #malinois #miaskogster
PART 1: Resource Guarding Winnie came to us because she was resource guarding. Before we even jump into training, we need to understand why this is happening and what events may have led up to it so we can properly diagnose the issue. “This isn’t food aggression. This is learned fear.” Dogs don’t guard food out of dominance — they guard it out of association. When every meal comes with hovering hands, pressure, testing, or punishment, food stops feeling safe. The dog isn’t saying “this is mine.” They’re saying “you’re not safe.” Fear always looks like aggression when humans ignore the cause. Constant control at mealtime builds anxiety, not respect. Change the human behavior and the dog no longer feels the need to protect itself. That’s real training. That’s real leadership. Be your dog’s advocate — keep those tails waggin’. 🐾 — Jonathan Cox #DogPsychology #FoodAggression #ResourceGuarding #DogTrainingTips #PositiveReinforcement FearBasedBehavior DogBehavior ModernDogTraining ForceFreeTraining DogEducation ResponsibleDogOwnership 360DogCare
I think these are some pretty straightforward things everyone can do to prevent resource guarding, or help their current situation. If you are someone who believes messing with your dog’s food prevents resource guarding, it doesn’t, it creates it. But, by all means, go ahead. For all the people who are going to say “I touched my dog’s food from a puppy and he doesn’t resource guard”, they were never going to be resource guarders in the first place, this is confirmation bias. Just like all my videos, this is aimed at the general population, of course there will be outliers. @graffitithecorgi being a good boi and remembering that sharing is caring with the help of his new fren 🤗. The other day I posted a clip of Brady snarling at another dog because he was being protective over his bone and I got some hate for it - people saying I’m a bad owner for not immediately correcting his behavior. It depends on the situation and the dog but in instances like this, we will typically let it play out with subtle encouragements to “be nice” and “be gentle”. I think this allows both dogs to learn how to effectively communicate with each other. I’m not a dog trainer so please don’t take this as professional advice on how to socialize your dog…it’s just how we’ve raised Brady and Graffiti, and they turned out pretty ok 😊. I also know a few owners who will physically intervene the second their dog starts to show even the slightest show of dominance, and that dog ends up having confidence issues around other dogs and has no idea how to act without the owner present. What are your thoughts on this? How do you handle resource guarding? I’m genuinely curious. Thx. ❤️ Ps the owner helped us get the ball back after this! #dogpark #corgis #dogbehavior #dogtraining #resourceguarding
