Happy birthday Robert Longo đ€đ©¶đ€
Today we celebrate the American artist Robert Longo, and look forward to his huge, hyperrealistic black and white drawings, which will be coming to the museum this spring. Mark your calendars â the exhibition opens 11 April!
Rising to prominence in the 1980s as a leading figure of the Pictures Generation, Robert Longo has long examined the effects of our image-saturated culture. He captures motifs from the whirlwind of images that surround us and then enlarges and constructs them, layer upon layer, into dramatic and gigantic charcoal drawings.
Learn more on the artist in this interview by Louisiana Channel, who met him in his studio in New York in June 2024. Se full 30-minute interview via the link @louisianachannel

How did Robert Longo become an artist? The answer includes a trip to Sicily and, more surprisingly, an unfortunate incident with a pigeon in Florence. In the latest episode of Artforumâs Under the Influence series, Longo reflects on the moments and people who have shaped his career, from Douglas Crimp to Cindy Sherman and Jannis Kounellis. The artist also offers up a favorite artwork: ThĂ©odore GĂ©ricaultâs 1818â19 painting The Raft of the Medusa, with its timely depiction of both despair and hope. Longoâs latest exhibition, âThe Weight of Hope,â opens @pacegallery in New York on September 11.

Robert Longo is known for turning charcoal drawings into something cinematic. Since the late â70s, heâs created large, hyper-detailed images - suited figures in motion, crashing waves, flags, weapons - that reflect the tension and spectacle of contemporary life. His work bridges drawing, photography, film and activism.
âI always wanted to make art that was like a punch in the face.â

IMPACT.
In 1979, Robert Longo froze movement like an explosion.
Bodies twist, suspend, collapse â
as if the city itself had struck them.
Part choreography, part violence, part sculpture.
A moment where New York becomes pure tension.
En 1979, Robert Longo fige le mouvement comme un choc.
Des corps tordus, suspendus, presque frappés par la ville.
Entre chorégraphie, violence et sculpture.
Un instant oĂč New York devient tension pure.
