I've been thinking about Robyn's legacy as a pop pioneer lately. I've also been listening to Björk's "Hyperballad" a lot again, for whatever reason. (How Scandinavian of me...) Lucky enough, there's a performance that ties those two strings together. In the hopes of manifesting the much-needed return of Robyn in the form of an album in 2025 (I am choosing to be radically optimistic in these bleak times), I present the Swedish icon's impassioned cover of the brilliantly ahead-of-its-time 'Post' track for the 2010 Polar Music Prize ceremony, where Björk was being honored with Sweden's "Nobel Prize of Music."  As if the pressure wasn't on for Robyn to deliver already, she had to do it just a few feet away from the Icelandic goddess herself. Most Björk covers are just plain bad, but Robyn is built different. She was visibly nervous, but did a fantastic job conveying the song's explosive emotion while making it her own with a 'Body Talk'-ified twist, slight lyric mix-up aside - "safe again with you" instead of "safe up here with you"...although I also like it that way? Somewhat amusingly, Björk sat entirely stone-faced throughout, but eventually broke with a smile at the end. Some people called shade at the time, while others insisted she was just touched by the gesture and paying close attention. Björk apparently also did an interview afterward explaining that she was being stoic because didn't want to mess up her makeup. I always like to revisit this performance. It's like seeing two very different corners of my music library interact and acknowledge each other's brilliance. (And now for the requisite "COLLAB, LADIES!!!") Bonus Björk quote: "Basically, 'Hyper-ballad' is about having this kind of bag going on and three years have passed and you're not high anymore. You have to make an effort consciously and nature's not helping you anymore. So you wake up early in the morning and you sneak outside and you do something horrible and destructive, break whatever you can find, watch a horrible film, read a bit of William Burroughs, something really gross and come home and be like, 'Hi honey, how are you?'" #bjork #robyn #hyperballad
