💫 There was a different side of Sammy Davis Jr. One worth seeing—and hearing.
Mentor to legends like Gregory Hines, Davis used his platform to challenge narratives and push for change.
In a 1968 PBS interview, he speaks candidly about representation, asking how the absence of Black stories in TV and film shapes how children see American history—and themselves.

One of Harry Belafonte’s closest confidants was the venerable Tony Bennett, who often wrote and gave personally inscribed books to Belafonte. Bendetto – as he was known to be called when he flipped from singer-songwriter into drawing and painting artist – also drafted a charcoal sketch of Belafonte, which the “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” crooner kept for many years until his passing.
From Martin Luther King Jr. to Sammy Davis Jr. and many other authors and inscribers, Belafonte’s book collection is both powerful and nuanced. With over 70 of these books up for bid in our “Harry Belafonte: A Man of Action” auction this March 6th at 10 AM LIVE from Julien’s Studios and online, you can become the proud owner of a true piece of civil rights history and Belafonte’s legacy.
