They are only happy chilling on the sofa or else following a fresh scent while out on the trails. They love nothing more than tracking and following a fresh scent. So remember this when it comes to training your dog. Let them sniff and explore, keep it creative & lay tracks to let them discover items you have hidden and then they will be calm and satisfied at home.

I’m not an expert when it comes to scent work. But I absolutely understand the benefits of the dog using its nose. And take full advantage of that!
Not everybody living in an apartment building in NYC is going to train their dog for search and rescue. But there are simple things you can do with your dog that replicate the same thing inside your home, or at the park.
That’s the simple stuff I can help you with.
But if you want to go deeper into real scent work, here are a few people I’d consider experts in that field. If it’s something you’re interested in, absolutely reach out to them: @blacktoothdogs and @rickmarkum
If you have a favorite Trainer, who is an expert in work, feel free to tag them in the comments!

Rottweilers doing scent work just hits different. 🐾👃🔥
Big, powerful dogs are known for strength, confidence, and presence—but give that same dog a problem to solve with their nose and you get to see an entirely different side of the breed.
Scent work gives Rottweilers an outlet for their natural drive, independence, and willingness to WORK. It’s not about perfect obedience. It’s about teaching the dog to hunt, problem-solve, stay committed to odor, and trust what their nose is telling them.
Whether the goal is sport detection, real-world detection, or simply giving your dog something productive and challenging to do—scent work can be an awesome outlet.
And watching a Rottie lock into odor and realize “I FOUND IT” never gets old. 💪🐾
Your dog has a nose. Give them a job for it.

I’m sick and grumpy today so this rant is what you’re getting.
Scentwork is such a gamechanger. If there’s one thing to put effort into I’d say try this. Honestly, it’s way more fun than fetch. It will meet your dogs mental and physical needs better than repetitive fetch. #kelpie #bordercollie #fetch
Fun fact: Dog’s have a sense of smell that’s between 10k - 100k times more acute than ours! #thisisakc #dogsofinstagram #dogs #brittany #scentwork #scentworktraining #akcmeetthebreeds

Teaching Scentwork - the “wrong” way! 🫣
He looks so smug with his packet of treats too! (They’re @skinnersfieldandtrial Dental and Digestion treats)
Disclaimer: when I teach my students or if I were training for competition, I wouldn’t reward a paw touch or a flip of the cone but if you could see this dog a few months ago, you’d realise why it’s just not important to me.
I’m allowing him to flip the cone and then indicate. He’s still being stimulated and he’s still recognising scent. ❤️
