A rare moment captured… it was a rarity to catch me without a smile on my face. My parents had to scrape together their last in order for me to take this school picture. I felt bad for them. I was young, but I understood… I understood our financial disparities. I understood I had to help my family. I understood I had to be a leader and a big sister to my little brothers. So much pressure but even then, I felt it was important to keep things light and keep a smile on my face… I still feel that way.

As a youth, I was always obsessed with School Daze; it was my energy; it was who and what I wanted to be and look like. It also changed my perception of college. I wanted to pledge Omega Psi Phi because the Gamma Dogs reminded me of Q Dogs. Spike Lee and Ruth Carter have done some of the best storytelling in cinema through film and costume design. My favorite director and costume designer created history with this film, and this jacket was one of the flyest pieces I had ever seen. Ruth Carter’s attention to detail is unmatched. That’s why I had to get the jacket made and wear it for my birthday and party over 17 years ago. To this day, it’s one of my favorite pieces in my closet. I had to pull up to the @officialspikelee Exhibit at the @brooklynmuseum to see the history of one of the best storytellers ever and see the original jacket in real-time. Thank you, @iamguywood, for making this jacket for me incredibly fast and for my birthday price.
