After a hard freeze like we’ve experienced this month, do a scratch test on your plants to determine where to prune! 🌿 If you scratch and see brown, this means this branch is not alive and will not flush out new leaves. Keep scratching down the branch until you see green and prune right above the scratch. If all the branches show green underneath, good news, your plant is still alive, even if they dropped all their leaves! The magnet test 🧲 brass is not magnetic so throw a magnet in your purse next time you go thrifting! 2. Weight- This is the most obvious one when comparing to cheap materials (not all lookalikes are plated steel) 3. Casting marks- A lot of brass hardware is made using casting methods. Check for a seem or a raised line from where the two halves of its mold came together. 4. The scratch test- if you can scratch it with something like a coin on the underside of the object, it should show shiny bright yellow underneath 5. Patina- brass without a lacquer or protective coating with show patina over time! If it’s green underneath, the branch is still healthy! Even if there aren’t visible signs of growth or leaves on the branch, you can prune it back to a node to encourage fresh growth and prevent legginess. No green? Then the branch can no longer produce growth and pruning it back helps to keep your plants tidy and redirect energy into new growth elsewhere on the plant✂️ Plant questions? We’ve got answers.
