Is your screen underexposed?
💡When creating a screen for screen printing, proper exposure is critical for achieving high-quality prints
Here are some signs that can indicate your screen is underexposed:
🙅🏼♂️ Emulsion Washes Away
Your screen should be able to handle a lot of water during washout. If the screen has not been exposed long enough, the exposed areas can start to wash away with your imaged area. This can result in the loss of fine details or the entire image.
🙅🏼♂️ Emulsion Remains Soft or Sticky
After exposure and washing out, if the emulsion feels soft or sticky to the touch, it’s a sign that it hasn’t been properly exposed. Properly exposed screens should feel hard and well-cured.
🙅🏼♂️ Discoloration
If your emulsion looks milky or faded around your image where the positive was, this is also a sign of under exposure.
🙅🏼♂️ Breakdown During Printing
An underexposed screen may break down more quickly during the printing process. The emulsion may start to degrade after a few prints, leading to a loss of image fidelity or the emulsion coming off the screen.
🙅🏼♂️ Lack of Detail and Definition
Underexposure can lead to a lack of detail in the printed image. Fine lines and small details may not be properly resolved, resulting in a print that lacks sharpness and clarity.
🙅🏼♂️ Ink Bleeding
If the screen is underexposed, you might notice ink bleeding or spreading beyond the intended boundaries of the design. This is because the emulsion hasn’t been fully hardened, allowing ink to seep through areas it shouldn’t.
