Fast forward 26 years from Nov. 1993 to 7 March, 2019. Alice In Chains finally makes their way to Auckland, New Zealand to make their debut to many lifelong fans.

The video I’m sharing is of AiC’s drummer, Sean Kinney addressing the sold-out Trusts Arena. To be perfectly honest, I think Sean owed it to the fans to some kind of explanation of missing the Auckland concert date in 1993. Sean even stated that it was the only time he’d ever missed a show. I guess the platypus won😂😂😂.

Sean Kinney talking about fans reacting to moving on without former band mates that have passed away. A conversation that is always a debate in the world of AIC purest. Personally I believe it’s because of how unique Laynes voice was. It’s just so hard to get past it. But kudos to AIC, because as Sean says this is what they do.

Isolated Drum Track of Sean Kinney’s Drum Parts on Alice In Chains’s “No Excuses”
This song was such a departure from Alice in Chain’s more well known heavier work. One thing that instantly stands out is drummer Sean Kinney’s soft, syncopated drumming, which helped build the mood of the song. From the opening bar, Kinney’s drum part avoids conventional 4/4 rock rhythms. Instead, he constructs a syncopated hi-hat pattern that plays off the main groove.

“No Excuses” — Alice In Chains | MTV Unplugged (Brooklyn, NY) | April 10, 1996
By April 1996, Alice in Chains hadn’t played a live show in over two and a half years. Layne Staley’s severe, highly publicized addiction had effectively grounded the band, making their MTV Unplugged taping in New York an incredibly tense, fragile environment. When they finally walked out under the candlelight, they couldn’t hide behind the crushing, down-tuned distortion that defined their massive Seattle sound. Instead, drummer Sean Kinney kicked off “No Excuses” by trading his heavy sticks for hot rods, laying down a smooth, highly syncopated groove that instantly anchored the nervous energy in the room.
For a drummer used to driving heavy, sludgy metal anthems, playing a fully acoustic set requires a completely different level of physical discipline. Kinney’s intro on “No Excuses” is a deceptively difficult, almost jazzy shuffle that relies entirely on delicate ghost notes, hi-hat finesse, and deep pocket control rather than raw power.
While the rest of the band was physically struggling—Staley was visibly frail, and Jerry Cantrell was actively battling severe food poisoning with a trash can hidden right off-stage—Kinney and bassist Mike Inez locked together to provide an unbreakable, incredibly tight rhythm section that kept the legendary taping from unraveling.
Stripping away the volume revealed exactly how brilliant Alice in Chains was on a purely compositional level. Kinney’s performance proved that true heaviness doesn’t always come from massive drum fills or cracked cymbals sometimes it comes from sitting deep in the groove and playing with absolute, chilling control.
