🌱 Seed starting season is here!
I’ve been starting a lot of seeds lately. So far I’ve got quite a few flower seeds going like marigolds and petunias, along with brassicas and lettuce for the garden!
I always love hearing what everyone else is planting this time of year. What are you starting right now? And is there anything you grow every year that you absolutely love?
I’m always open to new ideas, so tell me your favorites!
If you’re not sure what to plant yet, you can check your personalized planting dates in the Seed to Spoon app to see what’s the perfect time to start in your area!

Do garden seeds expire? 🌱
Seed packets have dates, but seeds don’t expire like milk. They just slowly lose germination over time and can stay viable for several years.

Here are 3 seed starting mistakes I made as a beginner gardener 🌱
1️⃣ Sowing seeds too deep
Most seeds should be sown at around 2–3 times their size. Tiny seeds often just sit on the surface. If seeds are buried too deeply they may struggle to reach the surface or rot before germinating.
2️⃣ Watering after sowing
Watering from above after sowing can wash seeds deeper into the compost or move them around. I’ve found it works much better to water the compost first, then sow the seeds.
3️⃣ Skipping vermiculite
A light layer of vermiculite helps retain moisture and keeps conditions more stable while seeds germinate.
I’m still learning as I go, so if you have any seed starting tips please share them below 👇

It’s not too late! I’m in zone 6 and we still have plenty of cold weather left! Some seeds need cold stratification to germinate. This is the perfect method to give them everything they need and be very hands off!
Winter sowing is my absolute favorite way to start seeds because it’s so easy and I’ve been very successful with it. Especially growing perennials from seeds! Have you tried it? Do you do anything different?

Everyone asks this in March: “What do I do with my winter sowing containers now?”
Honestly? Nothing. 🌱
Nature has it handled.
Your containers are designed to sit outside and do their thing — the freezing, thawing, snow, and rain are all part of the process that helps those seeds germinate at the right time.
But if you want to give them a tiny boost now that the snow is melting…
Look around your yard for the spots where the snow has melted much faster. Those areas are getting more sun and warmth, so you can move your winter sowing containers there.
Totally optional.
Not required.
But it doesn’t hurt. ☀️
Sometimes the best thing you can do for winter sowing is simply leave it alone and let spring do the work.

What are you planting this spring?

It's that time of year!
Time to plan your garden, order seeds, and even start planting in some cases.
Follow these simple planting tips and download our FREE companion planting guide at the link in our bio:
-follow recommended plant spacing and depth, usually listed on seed packages or recommended in methods like square foot gardening
-plant seeds that are 1-2 years old for best germination rates. If you are planting older seeds, plant more of them per hole.
-keep soil consistently moist until sprouts appear and plants begin to develop.
-thin seedlings once the first set of true leaves appear. Keep only the strongest/healthiest looking plants

Day 4 of my Seed Sowing Secrets… and today I’m talking about watering.
It sounds simple, but it’s often where things quietly go wrong.
At this early stage I stick to tap water and let it come up to room temperature first. Ice-cold water can shock young roots, and water straight from the butt can carry fungal spores and other pathogens that increase the risk of damping off — and once that takes hold, there’s no rescuing them.
I like to water my filled seed trays from the bottom before sowing so the compost is evenly moist but not saturated, or you can water gently from the top with a fine rose or a very light mister spray. Then let it drain well. Seeds won’t germinate in cold, soggy compost, and seedlings certainly won’t thrive in it.
Think moist, not wet. Comfortable, not cold.
A little care now saves a lot of disappointment later.
