On Friday the 13th we made a one-day pilgrimage into the mountains, camping at Hurkey Creek Campground in Mountain Center, California. Our site, number 63, rested among the great San Jacinto Mountains and the distant peaks of Idyllwild. Just beyond our tent door stretched a quiet wooded grove, the kind of place where the forest seems to breathe around you and you can feel a deep calm settle into your bones. We passed the hours in simple pleasures—playing Camping with Sasquatch and Anarchy Pancakes, watching a few movies as the daylight faded behind the mountains. When night settled in, the woods came alive with the calls of owls, the chorus of frogs rising from the creek, and the soft scurry of small creatures passing through the dark. The journey there carried us for an hour and a half along winding mountain roads that curled and climbed like ribbons through the hills. My hands held tight to the wheel as the turns came one after another, dizzying at times, though the road down proved far gentler. Hurkey Creek is a place of quiet beauty. The mountains stand tall, the forests gather close, and the views—no matter how many photos or videos one might see—cannot truly be captured. I headed to the Oregon coast for another solo camping trip. These state park yurts are growing on me, it’s perfect for the rain and cold. I really liked this area because the yurts were in the forest, but the rest of the campground was right on the coastline. I spent hours walking up and down the beach, looking at jellyfish, mussels, and clams. My favorite part of the night is cooking my dinner on an open flame. I didn’t even know how to use an axe year ago and now I chop firewood all the time, and it may seem silly, but it brings me a huge sense of accomplishment. I always like to bring my flute and play a song for the forest. I try to offer something because I always feel so held by the trees, I’ll cover the rest of the trip in a part two!
